Miguel Cotto, much like his trainer Freddie Roach, strongly disagrees with the judges' scorecards in his loss to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez this past Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After an entertaining fight, the judges awarded Alvarez the victory with scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111. Contrary to the seemingly wide margin, when Cotto spoke to Primera Hora, he expressed that he felt he had won the majority of the rounds.
"When you have the opportunity to dominate eight of the twelve rounds, you don't expect anything less than a victory," said Cotto. "It's something mental. The judges gave their [verdict] and you have to respect it."
Cotto appears to be in the minority as most of the media in attendance had Alvarez winning by similar margins. This marks the fifth loss of Cotto's career and many wonder if this defeat might be the beginning of the end.
"Miguel Cotto needs time to rest and talk to his family and that will determine it," Cotto commented.
Alvarez improved his record to 46-1 and captured the WBC Middleweight championship with his victory over Cotto.
