"Last year was a step in the right direction. I don't think I'll be satisfied until I win a world title. I'm hungry and I'm working hard to keep that 0...I'm ready to take my career to the next level and I'm hoping Roc Nation can deliver. My goal is to get to 15 wins by the end of 2016. Once that happens, I'm gunning for that world title. I have big goals," stated jr. welterweight Wellington Romero, who talked about his future plans and much more. Check it out!
PC: How's it going, Wellington? You had a very busy and successful 2015, fighting 5 times and going 5-0 during that stretch. How do you grade out your year and your performances from last year?
WR: Last year was great, but it could have been even better if some of the fights I had scheduled didn't fall out. Last year was a step in the right direction. I don't think I'll be satisfied until I win a world title. I'm hungry and I'm working hard to keep that 0.
PC: You are signed to Roc Nation. How did that deal come about and what are you hoping they can do for you and your career moving forward?
WR: My management team of Damian Ramirez and Ray Rivera are responsible for bringing me to Roc Nation. They've been with me since day one. They both have great reputations and their always looking to keep me busy. Right now, I want to get in the ring as soon as possible. I'm ready to take my career to the next level and I'm hoping Roc Nation can deliver. My goal is to get to 15 wins by the end of 2016. Once that happens, I'm gunning for that world title. I have big goals.
PC: You are tall for the division and you're a southpaw. Do you feel those are your biggest advantages or do you feel that you have other advantages over your opponents?
WR: For sure being tall and a southpaw is a great advantage. I like to box, but I can also bang if I need to adjust. The most important part of my game is making adjustments, and I believe that is my best advantage; my ring IQ. Sometimes fights are going to go the distance when you really want the knockout. If the knockout out comes early, then that's great, but I'm learning that winning is all that matters.
PC: When are you looking to return to the ring and what are your goals for 2016?
WR: As I mentioned, I'm ready to fight as soon as possible. I'm just waiting on Roc Nation to give me a date and I'm ready to roll. 2016 hopefully is going to be a massive year for me as long as fights don't keep falling out.
PC: Before I let you go, what are your thoughts on the division and potential matchups for yourself in the near future?
WR: The super lightweight division is loaded. There are a lot of talented guys in the division that I see myself fighting in the future. I've faced every style in the amateurs and there isn't a style that I haven't figured out. As long as I keep winning, eventually I'll be looking to face every champion in the division. I'm a former 2012 Olympian who proudly represented my country of the Dominican Republic. I feel us Olympians should be fighting all the top ranked fighters early in their career. My goal is to fight the best out there. I don't want a padded record.
