According to multiple reports, UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot during training and has been forced to pull out of his title defense against UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. The bout was supposed to headline the UFC 196 pay-per-view event on March 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. That card also features UFC women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm defending her title against Meisha Tate in the co-main event.
It's unclear at this point if McGregor will still headline the event. Reportedly, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone are being considered as possible replacements for dos Anjos. A similar situation happened to McGregor this past July, when former featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered an injury just days ahead of their scheduled showdown at UFC 189. Instead of Aldo, McGregor fought and defeated late replacement Chad Mendes. McGregor finally got his opportunity to face Aldo at UFC 194 where he scored a quick knockout just 13 seconds into the fight. Whether he fights or not on March 5, there's no doubt McGregor will have plenty to say about the last-minute injury suffered by dos Anjos.
[UPDATE: Nate Diaz has landed the assignment to step in and face Conor McGregor.]
