ANTOWYAN AIKENS: "I'M READY TO GO OUT HERE AND SHOWCASE...THIS IS GOING TO BE A HOT FIGHT"

By Percy Crawford | May 06, 2016
ANTOWYAN AIKENS:

People only remember you by your last fight and I'm taking that into this fight and I'm going out to win...At the end of the day, it's just going to be me and him in there and once the bell sounds we will find out who is the better fighter that night...I'm ready to go out here and showcase the real Antowyan Aikens. I will let my hands go and give the fans a great show," stated cruiserweight Antowyan Aikens, who talked about his upcoming clash with Christopher Brooker. Check it out!

PC: Big fight for you on Friday night against Christopher Brooker. How was preparation for this fight?

AA: Preparation has gone really well. I was already training, but I had a strong 8-week camp. I got good sparring with a lot of good guys.

PC: You're coming off of two blemishes, a draw and a defeat. He just defeated 2 undefeated guys. Are you looking at this as a win over Brooker, who is a hot fighter right now, will erase the memory of your last couple of fights?

AA: Yes definitely! People only remember you by your last fight and I'm taking that into this fight and I'm going out to win.

PC: Do you think being that he's the hot guy on a 5-fight winning streak that's he's overlooking you a little bit?

AA: He said it's going to be a great fight, but I feel like deep down inside, I think that they feel it's going to be an easy fight because of my last fight with Lanell Bellows. At the end of the day, it's just going to be me and him in there and once the bell sounds we will find out who is the better fighter that night.

PC: The day before Canelo-Khan, when all eyes will be on boxing, on Showtime, this is a big opportunity and a huge night for you.

AA: Yeah! It's definitely a big deal and it's an opportunity of a lifetime. I've been boxing since I was 10 years old and been in the game nearly 17 years now and I'm ready to go out here and showcase the real Antowyan Aikens. I will let my hands go and give the fans a great show.

PC: Even though you're from right next door in Jersey, Philly is his backyard. Do you have any reservations fighting him there? Do you feel you have to do something extraordinary to win?

AA: I just gotta be me and fight my fight technically. If I let him fight his fight, it doesn't matter if we're in Philly or Atlantic City or wherever. If I let him fight his fight, he's going to win. He will have the crowd on his side, but I know what I came to do and I know what I'm trained to do and I'm going to go in there and put in the work and give the crowd a good show.

PC: What do you think of him as an opponent?

AA: I watched him a couple of times, but the thing is I know Chris. I don't really know him on a personal level, but I know him on a cool level because we're both under the King's Promotions banner. But I seen him and I give him one thing, he always comes in shape and he brings good pressure. He is a pressure fighter, but I am a boxer/puncher, so that may play a part. I'm going out there to do my best and I'm ready for whatever he brings at me.

PC: You said you got a lot of good sparring in. How would you compare this camp as opposed to other camps?

AA: This camp was my best camp by far. My last 3 fights and 3 camps were kind of lackluster. They weren't the best camps and I did that to myself. I didn't want to take the initiative to work with somebody or have somebody come in. I thought I could do it all by myself and sometimes in the game of boxing, you can't do it all by yourself in certain fights. I like to take these opportunities to go up and become a better fighter, but I couldn't perform like I wanted to because I wasn't in the right shape that I needed to be in. But now that I have changed my regimen and I worked with who I needed to work with and I have the right team around me, they have been pushing me and I'm in much better shape than I was in last time. Last time that I went out to Vegas and fought, I was under pressure and I had to lose a good bit of weight in that week. A week ago I was about 2 pounds overweight at the most. I have never been that low, even in the early stages of my career, so I think I'm in a pretty good spot right now. I'm going out here to be the best that I can be and whatever the outcome is, that's what it's going to be, but I'm giving my best by far.

PC: I wish you the best. I look forward to watching the fight. Is there anything you want to add before I let you go?

AA: I appreciate you and expect a good fight. Even though it's "Iceman" vs. "Ice Cold", this is going to be a hot fight!
