ANGEL HEREDIA SAYS BADOU JACK TRAINING FOR JAMES DEGALE LIKE JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ TRAINED FOR 4TH PACQUIAO FIGHT

"I'm going to train Badou the same way I trained Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth Pacquiao fight. So we're going to try to do at least 14 weeks of good training on power; punching power," stated world-class Strength & Conditioning Coach Angel Heredia, who talked about Badou Jack's upcoming title unification with fellow super middleweight champion James DeGale. Check it out!

LS: Let's talk about Badou Jack's recent fight against Lucian Bute. A lot of people thought he won the fight, even though it was a draw. What did you think of the fight and how he looked?

AH: Badou was in the best shape ever. He did very good. He threw more punches this time and was able to move around, so I was happy because Lucian was also physically fit. As far as the draw, I think it was a very close fight. Sometimes I tell people to really analyze or judge a fight is hard. Lucian closed out the last rounds and Badou started slow, but he finished strong. I do know Badou threw more punches. I think he threw over 100 more punches than Lucian. But it was a very good fight. I think people want to see another fight like that which had a lot of action. I'm very happy for them.

LS: Now of course Badou is schedule to fight James DeGale and it looks like he might be going overseas for that one. How big of a challenge is that? I know he's fought big fights before, but how big of a challenge is it?

AH: It's a challenge for me because now – I was actually talking to Badou yesterday and talking about when we are going to start camp. We're supposed to start July 7th or 8th in case the fight goes on in September, and it seems like Floyd wants to take it overseas. Looks like they want to go to England and if that's the case, I don't want to call anyone out, but the judges [over there] are more difficult, so we have to be more physical and look for a knockout. So for the next camp, I'm going to train Badou the same way I trained Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth Pacquiao fight. So we're going to try to do at least 14 weeks of good training on power; punching power. Like I said, every fight that I have worked with Badou has been different preparations because obviously the opponents have been different. The first one we had was [Anthony] Dirrell, a hell of a puncher and able to sustain a good fight. Then we had the English guy, Groves, who was able to move around and be difficult, but Badou was able to stand it. Now we had Lucian and we had to make sure Badou could be quick but also have endurance and he had good punching power. The thing is Lucian Bute had a good chin and also developed some punching power, so it was a good fight.

But this upcoming fight with DeGale, [he] seems to be a very tricky fighter. He moves very well around the ring and he can throw punches at you that you don't expect. So Badou, for this fight, he needs to go out there and kill him and go for a KO. For that, we have to train specifically for power, maintain the speed and endurance that we got, but mostly is his power punches. So I'm going to work with him hard. It's going to be a difficult fight. If the fight goes to Vegas, then that would be good, but it just depends where the fight goes.

LS: Angel, how do you prevent your guys from overtraining, or is that just a myth? Because we always hear about guys saying they overtrained and left it all in the gym. Do you believe in that and do you do anything to not have them feel that way?

AH: Think about it like this! You can call me critical or you can call me crazy, but I rather lose money than take on a client, for example, who stops training 4 weeks into camp because apparently there was a date change and all of a sudden they keep changing it and changing it. And then I just decide, you know what, it's not the way to go. And the reason is not because I don't want to do my job. The thing is, the way I train, you give me a date and let's say you're going to fight September 20th; then I know how many weeks I have to break it down. The way I work is by breaking down the training by the weeks I want to have endurance or the weeks I want to work on power. It's a little complicated if I go over it over the phone, but I need to have the specific dates to be able to peak you at the right time. Now for example, if you give me a date of the 20th of September, then all of a sudden the date changes to November, I'm supposed to peak you on September 20th then we have a problem because then you can overtrain your guy and that's something you don't want to do.

So a lot of strength and conditioning coaches take a job for the money and they train them and they train them and at the end of the day, they overtrain them. You have to have certain and specific measurements. For example, how many medicine balls are you going to do a week and how many pounds will it be per week. How many meters are you going to run per week. How many kilometers are you going to run per week. See what I'm saying? Everything is broken down and being able to peak at the right time. But this is boxing and I understand some things are unpredictable and you don't have control and when things happen, it depends on a lot of things.
