"No, because, you know, I mean, a lot of people aren't good at going round by round, a lot of people don't fully understand the sport of boxing, but also, people have their opinions on what it takes to win a fight. Some people really do give a lot of credit to that aggressive style," stated undefeated WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman, who explained why he's not surprised that some people believe that former world champion Shawn Porter deserved the nod on the scorecards when his unanimous decision victory was announced. According to Thurman, although the fight may have looked close thanks to Porter's aggressive style, he was the one doing more damage and the clear winner of the fight.
"There's people who thought Marcos Maidana beat Floyd Mayweather the first time that they faced each other, where everybody knows that it was a competitive fight, but Mayweather did win. I really see my fight very similar to the fight that Floyd had with Marcos Maidana in the first event, you know. It was competitive, but there still was, like you said, a clear winner and a decisive winner," Thurman explained during a recent conversation with FightHype.com. "Like I said, my favorite line is from Ben Getty; smart fighters win, dumb fighters lose. I say it all the time, but being beat doesn't mean that you're a dumb fighter. Shawn fought a terrific fight. I was just able to edge him out in power punches. You gotta understand what professional boxing is and what these judges are looking for, and they're looking for damage being dealt upon three-minute intervals, and that's what I brought to the table."
