It's Thursday again and that means I get to dig my fingers deep into my bulging mail sack for a handful of awesomeness. By the way, just to clarify, I have to edit some of the emails I use in this segment because, as much as I enjoy reading them, the general reader may not be all that thrilled with a 32,000 word mailbag. Enjoy (or not):
The Bobfather Strikes Again?
He does it again! Paul u said it, doesn't it feel like deja vu ( Bradley vs PAC ). The BobFather is manufacturing this stuff he finds a fighter under his banner and puts him against PAC and has PAC lose knowing no matter what the pactards will remain loyal and support him to the end. No way in the hell this is not a setup. The Bob had the balls to say that the scoring was correct, oh yeah he's taking Horn to the espys, smh, the rematch will do great. ESPN just did their best numbers in over a decade so they have something to sell the sponsors on. It's just a win-win. The BobFather as you said will try to get a rubber match going if he can keep PAC around and also he done made horn damn near a household name overnight. Pacman even said it, "I feel set up." The BobFather strikes again. You gotta love this guy he makes Don King look like a Girl Scout!!!! Jay cee
Hi Jay Cee.
It's hard for me to come out and flat-out say that such and such decision is intentionally dirty, but we all have our own eyes and ears and the coincidences are too many to ignore. If all of these botched calls and bogus decisions are simple incompetence, then why do they ALWAYS work out in the best money interest of the promoter?
This World We Live In
I've admired your honesty, particularly about your fellow 'boxing journalists', for a while. It's painful attempting to stay connected to the sport with guys like Rafael leading the charge with ESPN as a platform, promoting an agenda as opposed to genuinely informing fans.
We're in a strange time: the 'media' anointed Loma, GGG and Kovalev boxing's saviors.
Loma after 9 fights made it #1P4P according to some, GGG of the shallow resume' made it according to others and Kovalev, also with a shallow resume', made the top 10 by reputation. To me, that says it all.
Well, the Krusher hype was exposed/ended by a consummate pro and GGG avoided the same fate when he 'ran' from Ward to wait on his money fight, Canelo. We'll see what happens with Lomachenko. Can he get it on with Rigondeaux? This is where Arum earns his money having miscalculated and sacrificed Donaire, his heir to the Pac fan base and moneypot, to Rigo. He won't let Rigo near Loma is my bet and Rafael will lead the assault tearing Rigo down as boring
...feeding his followers that say the same about Mayweather and Ward.
Good luck to you!
Tony
Thanks, Tony.
My response to you is simple-It's the media's fault. When the media is made up of paid shills, groupies, and useful idiots, it's easy for the sport's powerbrokers to set whatever narrative they want set. The media dropping the ball all the time, every time is the core cause of most of boxing's problems.
Bronze Bomber or Bronze Skid Mark?
Hi Paul,
Enjoy reading your articles.
What's your views Deontay Wilder? [He] gets offered a guarantee of £3 million with a PPV percentage for a fight with Dilian Whyte. Wilder has to be the most protected heavyweight of recent times and is fooling the boxing fans.
What are your views?
Simmie
Hi Simmie.
I just find the guy utterly boring. He's a big guy with a big punch and a compelling personality, but he has done absolutely nothing with that because, apparently, there's an abject fear of him being matched wrong and laid out.
But, let's be real here. Up until Anthony Joshua beat Wladimir Klitschko, Joshua's resume made Wilder's look like a murderer's row. It's funny how different narratives get crafted for two very similar stories.
However, Joshua HAS stepped up and Wilder has apparently no intention of doing the same. So, yeah, Wilder is worthy of a great, big yawn.
Canelo,GGG,Paulie,McGregor,Mayweather
Hi Mr. Magno,
Great MB!
Canelo is a much better fighter since the Mayweather fight, but he's not a finished product, yet.
He's got youthful reflexes which will serve him against a stalker like GGG who's a plodding fighter.
2 or 3 years ago I would've chosen GGG to dominate but Canelo has closed the gap and like you said GGG's competition has been very soft, compared to Canelo's.
I still can't choose Canelo, but his chances are better. Canelo isn't as good as Danny Jacobs IMO and probably won't be able to do better than Jacobs.
But Jacobs did expose GGG's limitations that Canelo should be able to exploit.
For both fighters, choosing the right sparring partners will be key to them emerging victorious.
I see this fight going 12 rounds and there being a disputed decision.
Just read today that Paulie Malignaggi is wanted by Conor McGregor as a sparring partner for his preparation to face Mayweather.
Don't think Malignaggi brings to McGregor's camp what he needs in preparation but it's good psychological
ly seeing that Mayweather and Malignaggi have a cordial relationship. -- Robert Jackson
Hi, Mr. Jackson
Everything you said was reasonable. And I hold firm to the fact that much of what has impressed the public about Golovkin has to be tossed out the window because of the favorable matchmaking used to his benefit. If Golovkin can do to Canelo what he's been able to do against more limited opposition, he will win. But that's a huge "if."
As for Malignaggi helping McGregor against Mayweather. The only way Paulie can help Conor beat Floyd is if he buys a sniper rifle, hides out in the balcony on fight night, and blasts Mayweather just as the opening bell sounds.
