Former middleweight champ Jermain Taylor was arrested Tuesday morning in Maumelle, Arkansas and charged with third-degree battery, first-degree terroristic threatening, and first-degree interference with emergency communication.
According to police reports, officers arrived at Taylor’s house at 2:41 a.m. Tuesday morning to respond to a domestic disturbance call. Police said that Taylor’s girlfriend reported being attacked physically by the retired boxer, bitten several times, and threatened with murder. She also said that Taylor attempted to damage her cell phone so she couldn’t call police.
Taylor was later released on criminal citations.
The former world titlist has been in and out of legal trouble since his retirement, including several felony convictions for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to possession of drugs. He was also charged with shooting his cousin in 2014 during an altercation outside his Little Rock home.
Medical experts have theorized that Taylor’s erratic behavior in recent years comes as a result of neurological damage caused during his years in the ring.
During his thirteen career as a pro, Taylor twice defeated Bernard Hopkins in middleweight title bouts and scored victories over the likes of Cory Spinks, Kassim Ouma, William Joppy, and Raul Marquez.
