MAGNO'S BULGING MAIL SACK: MAYWEATHER'S CONOR DILEMMA

It's Thursday again and that means I get to dig my fingers deep into my bulging mail sack for a handful of awesomeness. Let’s see what this week has in store.

Mayweather’s Conor Dilemma

Paul,

Even though MayMac won't be a competitive fight I'm not going to say I won't watch because I'm a big boxing head, not so much mma.

But I must admit if Floyd doesn't tko/ko Conor and it goes to a UD, this will make boxing look bad. No way should a guy that's never boxed go the distance with one of the best to ever do it. Thoughts?? -- Aldo

Definitely, Aldo. Mayweather should blow McGregor away. It may take a couple of rounds for him to deal with the awkwardness of a fighter who doesn’t follow boxing convention, but after that, Floyd should be toying with Conor until putting him away. Anything less will look bad.

I don’t think boxing will be hurt by a poor Mayweather showing, but it sure will be embarrassing.

Switching subjects a bit, but I’m surprised that more “purists” aren’t behind Mayweather teaching McGregor a lesson. I mean, here’s a guy insulting the sport by his mere presence at this level, calling it “half a fight” and none of these guys care one bit. This is very much a case of a real pro teaching a disrespectful upstart a lesson about the craft and art of boxing.

But, of course, Mayweather’s involved. So, the squares aren’t going to ever utter a positive word. We all know that by now.

The Race Race

Magno,

Hello.

You're not going to win! Our world is full of racial overtures and undertures.

This Mayweather/McGregor fight is rife with racial components.

If Floyd loses this fight his WHOLE career will be minimized. Floyd has a whole lot of weight on his shoulders.

McGregor will be considered the GREATEST that ever fought.—Robert Jackson

Jackson,

I agree. Hell, Mayweather’s biggest WINS have been used by some to minimize his career, so a loss might just wipe him from the map in some parts of the Universo Pugilistico.

It IS revealing that the MMA world is rallying around McGregor while much of the boxing world is rallying around fake boycotts and engaging in extreme pouting.

A Mango is a Fruit

I understand why you get a lot of haters , I think it's a good thing, you’re hitting home , at least for me , when I open an article I don't have to look at the name, I know when I'm reading Mango , I think you’re doing a great job , writing about all the things people imagine may be going on and shining some light on the subject , good for you keep it up . – Michael Foss

Thanks Michael.

I really do appreciate all the kind words because doing what I do in the way that I do is very often a thankless, financially unprofitable endeavor.

Life would be so much easier if I could bring myself around to selling out to promoters and industry people like some of my “colleagues” do. Maybe do a few puff pieces for the promoters or managers that pay me, take a few free vacations here and there. But, alas, I actually think readers are intelligent and care to have real perspective and not infomercials.

P.S. My name is “MaGNo,” not “MaNGo.”

Best Fights

Loving the articles Paul!

What fights of the past 30 years would you consider mandatory for a boxing fan to imbibe?—Jeremiah Davis

Hi Jeremiah...Thanks!

Man, that’s a tough question because there are so many. Right off the top of my head, these are my recommendations (in no particular order):

Roberto Duran-Iran Barkley, Julio Cesar Chavez- Meldrick Taylor, The Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward trilogy, Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo I, Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez I, II, and III, The Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales trilogy, Arturo Gatti-Ivan Robinson I, Arturo Gatti-Wilson Rodriguez, Micky Ward-Emanuel Augustus, Marco Antonio Barrera-Kennedy McKinney, Orlando Salido-Juan Manuel Lopez I.

But I know I’m leaving out TONS more.

As a fan of the craft of the sport, I would also suggest looking at career sets of modern masters like Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, and Floyd Mayweather.
