MAYWEATHER-PACQUIAO NEGOTIATIONS TIMELINE PART 2

By Ben Thompson | July 05, 2011
MAYWEATHER-PACQUIAO NEGOTIATIONS TIMELINE PART 2

Over the past two years, there's been a lot of uncertainty amongst fans and media alike regarding the events surrounding the negotiations for the mega-fight between pound-for-pound champions Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. In an effort to clear up the confusion, FightHype.com has put together an in-depth timeline detailing every major milestone that took place. From the moment that Floyd Mayweather came out of retirement to the minute that Manny Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum declared the fight to be off, all of the major events that dominated the headlines are included. Only the facts are included in this definitive timeline. Links to mulitple outside references have been included for each date, so fans can draw their own conclusions as to what went wrong at each step of the way.

Part 2 picks up shortly after the first round of negotiations failed and both fighters moved forward with bouts against different opponents. After their victories, Bob Arum would tell the media that both sides were secretly working towards a resolution to once again try to make the fight a reality. The only problem is that nobody from Team Mayweather would acknowledge that a "second round of negotiations" ever took place. Take a look back at the events that transpired which prompted Bob Arum to set a deadline to await Floyd Mayweather's response after all terms were allegedly agreed to.

After moving forward from the failed negotiations, Manny Pacquiao successfully defended his WBO welterweight title against challenger Joshua Clottey.

  • Mayweather repeats that all cut-off dates are off the table.

Shortly after his win over Shane Mosley, Mayweather would reiterate his stance that all future opponents, including Manny Pacquiao, would have to submit to the same type of random Olympic-style blood and urine drug testing that both he and Mosley undertook. "If Manny Pacquaio wants to fight, it is not hard to find me. We were going to make the fight a couple of months back but it didn't happen. I take my hat off to Mosley.  He had problems in the past, but he's a warrior. He took the blood and urine tests. I just want everyone to be on an even playing field. If every athlete is clean in the sport of boxing, take the test. If Manny Pacquaio takes the blood and urine tests, we can fight.  If he doesn't, we won't make the fight," Mayweather explained.

  • Pacquiao allegedly agrees to a 14-day cutoff for random blood testing.

"I am willing to help the sport for the future of the sport. I do not want to see anyone cheat or cheat this sport. For that reason I am willing to consider taking blood as close as 14 days prior to the fight, as long as, my opponent does the same, and it is not a lot of blood, just enough to test," Pacquiao was quoted as saying in a statement first released by reporter Timothy James on the website mpboxing.com. The site mpboxing.com, as well as mp8.ph, is owned and operated by Timothy James and Manny Pacquiao has declared it to be his official website.

  • Pacquiao "vehemently" denies agreeing to 14-day cutoff for random blood testing.

Shortly after news had spread regarding the statement released on his official website, Pacquiao vehemently denied claims that he had agreed to Mayweather's original compromise of a 14-day cutoff for random blood tests. Pacquiao's adviser Michael Koncz would allege that Pacquiao doesn't even know who Timothy James is, stating, "He never spoke to any reporter and never heard of the guy...never talked to anybody about boxing and his main concern is campaigning and winning the election on May 10. (Floyd) Mayweather is not even in our minds or in our thoughts." Koncz would then go on to quote Pacquiao as saying, "we'll fight Mayweather or any other fighter anytime, anyplace under the rules and regulations of the Commission of the state where the fight takes place."

  • Arum says both sides should remain silent if negotiations are to continue.

Speaking to Ronnie Nathanielsz of BoxingScene.com, Bob Arum suggest that both sides should remain silent and avoid speaking to the media about any terms if and/or when negotiations resume. "The more we go public, the more each side gets put into a corner and less likely the fight is to happen. That was a mistake that was made the last time, which was made by Mayweather and (Richard Schaefer) putting out a press release which blew up everything about the possibility that Manny was on performance enhancing drugs and that started everything. It went downhill and I don't want that to happen again," Arum explained.

  • Ellerbe denies that negotiations will resume; wonders who Team Pacquiao plans on negotiating with.

"Ain't nobody thinking about Manny Pacquiao, Bob Arum or Freddie Roach. Floyd isn't thinking about none of them, and there ain't no negotiations starting, period.  Floyd is just coming off a great win.  He's not thinking about any of them," Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe would comment when asked if negotiations would indeed resume as quickly as Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach had suggested. "Who are they negotiating with, themselves?"

MAY 11, 2010

  • Arum announces November 13 as date of Pacquiao's next fight.

One day after Manny Pacquiao won his election to the Philippine Congress, promoter Bob Arum announced November 13 as the date of his next fight. "I have reserved the date [November 13] and both the Dallas Cowboys Stadium and MGM Grand in Las Vegas are available. The cable systems and the satellite providers have put the date aside for us, so the table is set. Manny can get sworn in at the end of JUNE, then attend the sessions of congress in JULY and -- as long as he keeps in shape -- then he has plenty of time to train for the fight," Arum announced.

MAY 12, 2010

  • Koncz suggests that both sides should stick to a gag order assuming negotiations continue.

According to Manny Pacquiao's adviser Michael Koncz, both sides should refrain from speaking to the media about any terms and conditions in order to get a deal done. "That means everyone, including Freddie Roach and Bob Arum. Bob can be just as bad as Freddie on this. And I include myself as well. None of us, including the other team, should be discussing terms and conditions with the press, really. It doesn't help, it only hurts the situation. Let's work out a deal and keep the terms and conditions private business," Koncz would tell Michael Marley of Examiner.com. "That way, nobody's ego gets hurt and nobody is trying to gain the upper hand in the media or to make themselves look better than the other guys. We can't work this out in the press but we can do it privately, discretely and, I think, quickly."

MAY 13, 2010

  • Arum hints that there is a "plan" to resume negotiations, but reiterates importance of gag order.

"I don't want to get into that, only to say that there is a plan. I don't want to get into what's happening but there are things happening on the ground," Arum replied when asked if he was going to engage in negotiations with Team Mayweather and when that might take place. "I would rather not comment on that. Just to say I have my Marching orders and it will be sooner rather than later." Arum would also reiterate how important it was to avoid discussing details of negotiations with the media. "Once you start negotiating through the media, it becomes ego driven. People can't wait to give a statement to the press. The flames just shoot up and there is no real opportunity for rational behavior to take over. Everyone is so interested is setting forth his position to the media that it becomes the contest. That involves me as well as everybody else," Arum added. "I am not going to discuss through the media. I understand you need to ask the question, but I am not going to answer because that starts the negotiation in the media."

  • Unbeknownst to his advisor, Pacquiao agrees to 14-day cutoff for random blood tests...for real this time.

"As long as they're not getting a large amount of blood, I am willing to give out blood as close to two weeks before the fight," Pacquiao was quoted as saying by the Manila Bulletin. His adviser, Michael Koncz, could not confirm nor deny the comments, however, stating, "I've seen that, but I don't have a comment on that because I'm in Puerto Rico, and I would need to get back to Manila to talk to Manny to see if that in fact was a statement he made or not...I'm flying back to Manila tomorrow, so I don't want to make a comment one way or another until I sit, face-to-face, with Manny."

  • Rumors surface from members of Team Pacquiao that Mayweather is demanding more money.

Manny Pacquiao's lawyer, Franklin Jeng Gacal, as well as his business manager, Eric Peneda, reveal that they both received word that Floyd Mayweather is no longer willing to agree to a 50-50 split of the purse. "We just got word that it seems to be that way. But we will never agree to that," remarked Gacal, who said he had heard that Mayweather now wanted a bigger share due to the the success of his pay-per-view bout with Mosley, which resulted in 1.4 million buys compared to the 700,000 buys Pacquiao did his previous bout with Joshua Clottey. "It's the Cotto fight they should look at and not the Clottey fight. And it's pretty even, so we're sticking to the fifty-fifty percent split between Manny and Floyd if they ever fight," Gacal reiterated. Pineda would add, "Yes, we were told that Floyd now wants a bigger share. And if that's the case, we now feel that he really doesn't want to fight Manny because Floyd knows we will never agree on that."

  • Arum scolds Gacal and Pineda; says they know nothing about negotiations.

"I know Manny is just as angry as I am that these guys, who have nothing to do with any of these negotiations, keep shooting their mouths off and inflaming the situation. What are Eric Pineda and Jeng Gacal, who know nothing about what's happening, doing? Why are they shooting their mouths off," an angered Arum would tell Ronnie Nathanielsz of BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard when he first received word of the comments made by Gacal and Pineda regarding rumors that Mayweather was demanding a bigger purse. "They (statements) are more than irritating, because so much of this is ego and when you say that if he (Mayweather) says this Manny Pacquiao is not going to fight, that's not the way you negotiate."

"I don't know what's going on. I'm staying out of it. I just know Manny will be fighting someone in November. We hope the opponent is Mayweather. If not, we'll fight someone else and we'll be ready," Roach would tell Ruslan Chikov of Boxingscene.com when asked about the current status of negotiations.

  • Mayweather reveals that he'll be taking the rest of 2010, and possibly 2011, off.

On June 2nd, Mayweather was spending time with Armando Carral, an 18-year-old with Hodgkin's Disease whose wish to meet the undefeated fighter was granted through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. While conducting a video interview during the event, Mayweather nonchalantly broke the news that he was taking the rest of the year off. "At this particular time, Floyd Mayweather is taking probably a year off, a couple of years off, from the sport of boxing. I don't really know what the future holds for Floyd Mayweather at this particular time, but, you know, I can probably take a couple of years off," he would explain to the reporter.

  • Once again, Ellerbe denies any negotiations are taking place.

Nearly a month after the first time he commented on the subject, Leonard Ellerbe once again denied that negotiations were taking place. • Arum chooses not to believe Floyd's comments about taking 2010 off; says a proper announcement should be made via press release.

Despite Floyd Mayweather's comments about taking the rest of the year off, Bob Arum says he chooses not to believe Floyd because the "proper way" to make such an announcement is via press release. "I'm used to Floyd saying a lot of things like that. Floyd says a lot of things and I choose to believe differently. Mayweather says a lot of things that he does not believe. It could have been just spur of the moment, him saying he was taking a year or two years off. I'm sure, if it is true, he will make that statement in the proper way which is to put out a press release," Arum would tell Michael Marley of Examiner.com. He would also repeat those comments to the ABS-CBN North America News Bureau, stating, "I'm saying, that's Floyd being Floyd. Until there's an official release saying that, I choose to believe differently."

Speaking to Spanish sport show República Deportiva via satellite in front of the STAPLES Centers, De La Hoya briefly talked about the current status of negotiations and, with a grin on his face, hinted that the two sides were extremely close to making the biggest fight in boxing a reality. "These negotiations have been real difficult for various reasons, but we're really close to finalizing the contracts, even though they've been complicated," he commented. • Roach suggests that Pacquiao is ready to agree to Mayweather's request of random blood and urine tests.

In an interview with The Toronto Star, Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach suggested that he believed a fight with Floyd Mayweather was going to take place because Pacquiao was ready to "call his bluff" and agree to random blood and urine tests leading all the way up until the fight. "At this point I feel that Manny is going to agree to everything. That's our bluff. We're going to call his bluff. We'll see...I can't speak for Manny, I can't speak for (Bob) Arum, but I feel the fight will happen because Manny is going to call his bluff and say 'let's do it'," Roach commented. Deciding to lift his own gag order, Bob Arum speaks to a number of different media outlets and declares that there are no longer any "issues" standing in the way, suggesting that both sides have come to an agreement on all terms, and the decision now rests with Mayweather as to whether or not he wants to fight this year. "That's all been resolved," Arum stated to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports regarding the dispute over random blood and urine drug testing. "It may be that Floyd wants to fight in May [2011], in which case [Pacquiao will] fight [another opponent] in November and fight him in May. I am not going to talk about the specifics of the negotiations. You have my statement that there are no real issues that I can see, except whether he wants to fight now or later or not at all." Arum would also tell the Las Vegas Review Journal,"There's no longer any issues...The question is whether Mayweather is willing to fight this year." "There's no actual date of a deadline, but it's sometime in the middle of July. If we haven't gotten this thing locked up and done then we're going ahead and taking another opponent. We're not just going to sit there and blow our chances for a fight in November," Arum explained to Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com.  He repeated that comment to Chris Mannix of SI.com, stating, "This really depends, as I see it, on whether Mayweather wants to fight [Pacquiao]. • Arum hints that Pacquiao has only agreed to the 14-day cut-off.

"We don't care who's doing the test. They stopped taking blood 18 days before [Mayweather-Mosley], so that shows they can do it and be fine," promoter Bob Arum would tell Lance Pugmire of the L.A. Times, hinting that Pacquiao's agreement to a 14-day cut-off should be sufficient for Mayweather considering that USADA took no additional tests 18 days prior to his bout with Mosley. As far as the random blood and urine tests are concerned, it's still unclear as to whether or not Pacquiao agreed to any terms other than a 14-day cut-off, but Arum continues to talk as if he hasn't. "If there's information that emerges in the final 14 days, we can go to the [state boxing] commission and ask for more tests. We can work it out. No one's looking to pull any fast ones," Arum added.

"I know that Manny would have a problem fighting if [trainer] Freddie Roach were not available, so we're just waiting to see," Arum added. According to Ronnie Nathanielsz of BoxingScene.com/InsideSports.ph, Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz had a "very positive meeting" with Miguel Cotto to discuss a possible rematch with Manny Pacquiao. Evidently, Koncz said a "private meeting" with Cotto and his right-hand man Bryan Perez was "very positive" and the Puerto Rican star, who had recently moved up and captured a title at jr. middleweight, was open for to the idea of a rematch below the 154-pound weight limit.

"We're ready to go on with the Mayweather fight, but we have to make contingency plans just in case and I don't really want to talk about that too much. But Mayweather has until the end of the week. He could wait until the last minute. If it's Friday and it's 11 p.m., and he says we have a deal, we have a deal," Arum would explain to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. "We're waiting on Floyd. He might not want to fight again this year. If he wants to say, 'See you next year,' there's always next year. But I don't think we can't wait much longer for him to make up his mind because if we do the fight we want to make it as big as we can make it, and that takes time. • Koncz says Pacquiao is prepared to move on to Margarito or Cotto if Mayweather doesn't respond by deadline.

"We don't know what Mayweather is going to do. Last week, I had dinner with Cotto in Puerto Rico to see where he stands and he's willing and able to do a rematch with Manny. Bob and I have spoken about both fights, Cotto and Margarito. Manny asked me to get proposals from Bob on both fights, so that's what I am doing," Koncz would also reveal to ESPN.com.
