Three-division world champion and Mexican ring legend Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO's) is set to face British lightweight champion Anthony Crolla (21-2, 9 KO's) on the undercard of Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz, the September 17th clash between undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather and WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz. Considering that the event takes place on the weekend of Mexican Independence Day, the addition of Morales will no doubt boost interest in the event.
Despite having already carved out his own Hall of Fame career, Morales might best be known as being the last man to ever defeat pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao, who would later avenge that loss twice over. Shortly after that, Morales would retire from the sport, but 2 years later, he announced his comeback and has since been trying to capture a legitimate world title in a fourth division. In his last bout, Morales lost a controverisal majority decision to Marcos Maidana, who ironically holds a TKO victory over the card's headliner and current WBC welterweight champion Ortiz.
With the very popular and young undefeated Mexican Saul "Canelo" Alvarez also rumored to be fighting on the card, it's clear that Golden Boy Promotions is pulling out all the stops to make sure Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz is a huge success. The addition of Morales is sure to add to the already strong Mexican fan base that will be tuning in for the event. Not to mention, his opponent, Anthony Crolla, will draw interest from UK fans, a lot of which will be tuning in to see Floyd Mayweather.
