"I hear Oscar's talking about fighting again. If Oscar plans on fighting again, he better come see me," remarked world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., who's been hearing rumblings in Las Vegas that future Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya is contemplating a return to the ring. Fresh out of an extended stay in rehab for undisclosed substance abuse issues [although sources first informed FightHype.com it was a problem with cocaine], De La Hoya has recently been reminiscing about his younger years on his official Twitter page, posting photos and videos of himself boxing when he was still a teenager. According to Mayweather Sr., De La Hoya will likely make one more run in the sport despite announcing his retirement over two years ago.
"I'm going to be honest with you, man, I think Oscar will fight again. Hopefully he straightened himself out in rehab and everything, but I think he will go one more time, if not more," Mayweather Sr. added in a recent conversation with FightHype's own Percy Crawford. Honestly, why shouldn't De La Hoya want to return to the ring? After all, as a fighter, being forced to quit on your stool isn't exactly the type of memory you want to have from your last fight. Not to mention, watching a 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins still flourish against younger competition has got to fuel De La Hoya's own belief that he can still compete against some of the current crop of champions. Is anyone truly convinced that Miguel Cotto or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be too much to handle for De La Hoya? Better yet, can you imagine the type of pay-per-view numbers that a showdown between The Golden Boy and Canelo Alvarez would produce?
Whether or not De La Hoya actually does decide to give it another run remains to be seen, however, in my opinion, the level of talent is thin in certain areas and I definitely think he's capable of beating quite a few top contenders and champions out there right now. On the strength of his name alone, there's quite a few big pay-per-view events that can still be made by the 38-year-old De La Hoya.
