In a series of recent posts on his official Twitter page, Amir "King" Khan set the record straight on a number of topics, dismissing several of his rivals comments and sending a message to undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather. Khan first addressed Marcos Maidana, who he beat in a Fight of the Year candidate last December, touching on Maidana's decision to turn down an opportunity at a rematch with Mexican legend Erik Morales, whose original opponent, Lucas Matthysse, was forced to pull out of their showdown this weekend on the undercard of Mayweather vs. Ortiz. "Wow, Maidana refuses to fight Morales on the Mayweather/Ortiz card. I'd jump at that chance. How could you say no to the WBC world title? And I know Maidana never wanted to give [Victor] Ortiz a rematch too," Khan stated, taking a dig at Maidana's unwillingness to face Morales on the PPV extravaganza for a shot at the vacant WBC jr. welterweight title at stake.
Next in line during Khan's rant was Timothy Bradley, who holds the WBO's version of the jr. welterweight title. "Bradley will always be a b*tch, but if he decides to grow some balls and fight me in December - I'll give him the respect for stepping up before I b*tch slap him all over the ring for making me wait," Khan continued, referring to Bradley's unwillingness to face him when he turned down an opportunity at a lucrative unification bout, which should have taken place earlier this year but has yet to materialize.
Finally, Khan targeted none other than Floyd Mayweather. Although many have been under the impression that Khan is on a very short list of future opponents for the undefeated champion, Mayweather quickly dismissed the notion, suggesting that Khan should instead face his own fighter, Mayweather Promotions jr. welterweight prospect Jessie Vargas. "Once he faces the future of boxing, which is Jessie Vargas, my fighter, Amir Khan, does he have a fight with Floyd Mayweather? Absolutely! But he must beat Jessie Vargas first. You must earn; you got to earn," Mayweather would explain during his open workout held last week. "He fought a Zab Judah that I fought six years ago. You know, I fought a young, hungry, strong Zab Judah; he fought a Zab Judah that is a lot older. But we want Amir Khan to fight Jessie Vargas. If Amir Khan gets past Jessie Vargas, then Amir Khan has a fight with Floyd Mayweather."
Naturally taking offense to the idea of facing a fighter with fewer fights than himself, Khan hit back, stating, "Never heard of Jessie Vargas until Floyd Mayweather mentioned that I have to fight him. He looks good, yes, but only has 16 fights. He's a prospect and I'm a unified world champion. If Jessie Vargas fights and gets past Marcos Maidana, then I'll fight him. Like Floyd said, you have to earn it." Khan makes a fair point, as I, for one, think this is merely a ploy by Mayweather to get publicity and build the name of his fighter, Vargas, who's still a prospect, by linking it to Amir Khan, a world champion with a strong following. Case in point, just weeks ago, the average fan had never herd the name Jessie Vargas, but today, a number of British fans are now asking, "Who's this Jessie Vargas?" It was a job well done on Floyd's part, but given Khan's comments, it doesn't sound like he has any plans to go through Vargas to get to Mayweather.
