FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR: "VICTOR ORTIZ GOT EXACTLY WHAT HE DESERVED"

By Percy Crawford | September 19, 2011
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR:

"Man, look here man, let me tell you something, Lil Floyd did exactly what he was supposed to do in that situation. When the referee tells you to fight, you don't have to wait for sh*t. You can throw one shot and knock a motherf**ker out cold and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Once Joe Cortez brought them back together to fight, it was on. It's not Lil Floyd's job to figure out what Joe Cortez doing and all of that shit; once he moved, Ortiz became available to be hit...Victor Ortiz got exactly what he deserved," stated world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., who shared his thoughts on his son's 4th round knockout of Victor Ortiz this past Saturday. Check out what he had to say about the performance, the knockout, and much more.

PC: How have you been Big Floyd?

FM: Everything is good.

PC: Lil Floyd got a big knockout win Saturday night against Victor Ortiz. There are a lot of different opinions out there on the way that the fight ended. What's your take on the conclusion of that fight?

FM: Man, look here man, let me tell you something, Lil Floyd did exactly what he was supposed to do in that situation. When the referee tells you to fight, you don't have to wait for shit. You can throw one shot and knock a motherfucker out cold and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Once Joe Cortez brought them back together to fight, it was on. It's not Lil Floyd's job to figure out what Joe Cortez doing and all of that shit; once he moved, Ortiz became available to be hit.

PC: Yeah, to me, the ending of the fight was not even as bizarre as people are making it out to be.

FM: There was nothing bizarre at all. Honestly man, Ortiz had every opportunity to protect himself because when him and Lil Floyd embraced, they were chest to chest, Lil Floyd backed up and put his hands up and then hit him with the left hook, paused, and then the right hand and that was all she wrote. But Lil Floyd was whoopin' his ass anyways man.

PC: When you saw Victor Ortiz land the intentional headbutt on Lil Floyd, what was your reaction?

FM: Ah man, I was hoping Joe Cortez saw it because it took a second for him to get over there to him. But he saw itj, and the whole damn world saw it, and then he tried to say it was not intentional and wanted to do all of that hugging and kissing and shit. If that headbutt lands on Lil Floyd's eye or forehead and cuts him so bad that he can't continue, then you either have Lil Floyd winning by disqualification, if they felt it was intentional, or even worse than that, having the fight end in a no contest, if they felt it was unintentional. That would have been an injustice right there. Then the people that bought the fight should have really been pissed off, so in my honest opinion, man, Victor Ortiz got exactly what he deserved. That shit was definitely on purpose.

PC: I also felt the Larry Merchant situation had been building and it was long overdue. He has a tough job of interviewing fighters when they are at their highest emotional peak, but I also feel like he uses that to disrespect them, belittle them, and take little shots at them. I think he had that coming from someone.

FM: Larry Merchant got...man look, even though me and Lil Floyd going through our situation right now, he gave Larry Merchant exactly what the fuck he deserved, man. He's pressing my son on legal punches and then watches the replay with Ortiz and lets him off the hook when he says the headbutts were not intentional. Man, come on, man. He didn't question anything about the headbutt at all. So I think Lil Floyd was right to tear into his ass. He had that coming for a long time, man.

PC: Now getting off the end of the fight and moving to the actual fight itself, what did you think of Floyd's performance?

FM: He did what he wanted to do in there. I can tell that he had seen Ortiz been dropped a lot because he was loading up some of his right hands. He wasn't really throwing combinations early, so I could tell he thought he could get him out of there. And honestly, he was getting stronger, so he probably would have later on; Ortiz would have taken a lot of damage if that fight continued. Floyd had his way with him. I know my man was telling me that people would want to see a rematch, but I don't think so, man. It was a one-sided fight. This man would be coming into a rematch knowing this man done knocked him out already, and honestly, I think the next time would be worse. Lil Floyd would do him worse if they fought again.

PC: I can't let you go without asking if you think Pacquiao is next if he's successful in November.

FM: Man, it's simple, man. If he will take the test, he can be next. That's plain and simple. Let's just make sure everything is on the up and up and he could get it. Man, Pacquiao ain't beating no Lil Floyd, man. I'm gonna tell you that now. I have said it before. If Pacquiao take that test, Lil Floyd will beat 3 Pacquiao's in one night, man. That fight there would be nothing at all for Lil Floyd. But I don't know if he will take the test, so we will see. From what I hear, he's talking about the money being an issue now (laughing). He knows what will happen if he signs to fight Lil Floyd.

PC: I'm not gonna hold you up too long on a Sunday. I appreciate your time my man and I will talk with you later in the week.

FM: Anytime Percy. You take care now; good hearing from you.
