KHAN BACKTRACKS ON COMMENTS:

Earlier this week, WBA and IBF jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan claimed that undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather had agreed to fight him some time next year. "I'll get that fight before Manny. Mayweather's scared to fight Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather has agreed to fight me," Khan would tell FightHype's own Brad Jones during an in-depth interview that originally took place late last week. He would later reiterate those comments during a press conference held in England to announce his December 10 title defense against Lamont Peterson. "Talks have already taken place and Mayweather has agreed to fight me," Khan would tell Sky Sports News. "Talks have been [happening], Mayweather is keen to take the fight on, it'll be a huge fight." When FightHype.com reached out to Khan's publicist, however, we were told a different story, suggesting that his comments were taken out of context and that no one from Mayweather's camp had agreed to or even spoken to them about any fight. At yesterday's press conference held in Washinton DC, Khan himself would confirm that Mayweather never agreed to anything.

When asked if he had made comments about Floyd Mayweather agreeing to fight him, Khan denied ever making any statements whatsoever regarding talks or a verbal agreement. "I didn't make no comment about that. Someone tweeted me about that and, I mean, whatever; that fight is in the future. It's good to have goals in life, ambitions," he explained to a group of reporters at the press conference. "Floyd Mayweather has never said yeah. He never said yeah," he added. Of course, this should come as no surprise to regular readers of the Mayweather Mailbag, as I told you there was absolutely no truth to the rumor. Like I said, Khan is merely looking to make himself more relevant and build his own exposure, and what better way to do that than to attach your name to one of the biggest names in the sport. I can't say I blame Khan, however, in the future, he may want to be a little more careful about putting bold statements out there that are 100% false.
