SCHAEFER CONFIRMS DE LA HOYA HAS EXPRESSED INTEREST IN MAKING A COMEBACK

On Saturday night, shortly after 52-year-old Dewey Bozella made a succesful pro debut on the undercard of Hopkins vs. Dawson, an inspired Oscar De La Hoya surprisingly posted a comment about a potential comeback on his official Twitter page. Apparently, there may be more to that comment than just a knee-jerk reaction as it looks like the return of the Golden Boy might be a very real possibility. When asked if De La Hoya was serious about the idea, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer confirmed that the future Hall of Famer did indeed informed him of his interest in making a comeback.

"I think he might give it one more," Schaefer would tell Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. "Just always remember, sports is entertainment, and when it comes to entertainment, Oscar is No. 1. No question about it. There are a lot of other people in boxing who, frankly, should retire before Oscar does, from promoters to refs to judges," he continued. "If Oscar really wants it, and devotes himself 1,000 percent, he can still beat anyone. I really believe that from the bottom of my heart."

Although Oscar has maintained that he'll never fight again, rumors have continued to surface about an eventual comeback during the 2 1/2 years he's been retired. As FightHype.com previously reported, according to a source, the coffers at Golden Boy Promotions are running low as the company has yet to find a pay-per-view star to replace the income that De La Hoya generated when he fought. In fact, it was that same source who told us back in May that De La Hoya was hoping to make a return to the ring in the very near future, but those that were close to him advised that he first seek treatment for his substance abuse problems. "It's a serious problem. He ain't hitting golf balls; he's hitting eight balls. He barely even goes to fights anymore. Richard doesn't want to be embarrassed. Fighting is definitely out of the picture if they don't even want him to appear at events. With Golden Boy's reputation and Ring Magazine and other entities that they established, there's just too much on the line to lose. It would ruin their reputation. Richard Schaefer is Golden Boy right now," the source stated.

With his stint in rehab behind him, it looks like the comments about De La Hoya from our source may be coming to fruition after all.
