Nearly 24 hours and 10 tweets after telling the world that the performance of 52-year-old Dewey Bozella, in his pro debut on the undercard of Hopkins vs. Dawson, has inspired him to make a comeback, future Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya has apparently had a change of heart. "Bozellas win inspired the world to never give up. no come back for me," De La Hoya commented in his latest update on his official Twitter page. Despite the fact that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer would tell Dan Rafael of ESPN.com that "he might give it one more", it looks like De La Hoya's had decided otherwise after having a day to reflect on it; either that or De La Hoya was simply putting out a feeler to see how fans would react to the idea.
After all, it's not like Schaefer immediately shot down the idea like he has in the past. In fact, during his conversation with Rafael, Schaefer made it sound as if a comeback was definitely possible so long as De La Hoya dedicated himself to it. "Just always remember, sports is entertainment, and when it comes to entertainment, Oscar is No. 1. No question about it. There are a lot of other people in boxing who, frankly, should retire before Oscar does, from promoters to refs to judges," he explained. "If Oscar really wants it, and devotes himself 1,000 percent, he can still beat anyone. I really believe that from the bottom of my heart."
Time will tell if De La Hoya, who continues to post mixed messages on his Twitter account, will actually return to the ring. If he wants to make sure there's no confusion in the future, perhaps he should avoid hinting about it on his Twitter account, and more importantly, he may want to tell Schaefer to stick to the same script that they've used in the past and vehemently deny any rumors.
