"I have a tear in my patellar tendon. I will find out Monday (today) if I need surgery to repair it," stated Future Hall of Famer James Toney, who hit up FightHype.com to give us an update on the status of the injury he suffered in his unanimous decision loss to Denis Lebedev last Friday. It was clear that something happened to Toney's leg during the 2nd round, but the extent of the injury was never specified during the telecast. Initial reports in Russia was that he had suffered a sprain, but after returning to the States, Toney learned that the extent of the injury was far more serious. Toney, however, said the injury that he sustained was the least of his problems as he felt the need to apologize to his fans, who he felt he let down.
"I want to apologize to all of my fans that I let down. I had a ton of support going over there and I feel as though I let a lot of people down. I promise those people I will keep my weight down and I will be back," he explained. Toney, who weighed in at 199 pounds, the lightest he has weighed since 2003, assured FightHype that he felt great at the weight, stating, "Ah man, I felt good. I will definitely keep the weight off. I felt really good at the weight. I was real comfortable after that 1st round."
Toney, however, took exception to some of the comments he's seen and heard after the fight. "Man, they really trying to write me off. I'm not going anywhere. I was a one-legged fighter from the 2nd round on. I couldn't plant, I couldn't throw power shots, I couldn't do nothing, man. Every time I threw a right hand I felt like I was going to fall on my face. I just have to go back to the drawing board and see where we go from here," he added.
