According to a report on record.com.mx, a local newspaper is linking WBC jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to an altercation that took place over the weekend. Apparently, during a recent visit to Puerto Vallarta, bodyguards that were supplied to Alvarez by the Governor of Nayarit, Roberto Sandoval CastaƱeda, roughed up and injured two men, one being a Canadian diplomat. On top of that, the newspaper alleges that Alvarez skipped out on a $3300 (45,000 pesos) bar tab at the nightclub Strana. While Alavarez admits to being in Puerto Vallarta to bring in the new year, he denies any such incident taking place, blowing it off as simply a rumor and maintaining that he's focused on a potential clash with undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather.
"I do not want to give importance to such things. I will be responsible for the things I do, but not rumors or things they say about me, " Alavarez explained to record.com.mx. "Right now, my mind is on a possible fight with Mayweather. It would be a dream fulfilled." Although Alvarez has not been guaranteed an opportunity to face Mayweather, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has stated in the past that he certainly could be a possibility. Furthermore, according to reports from representatives of Canelo Promotions, Alvarez will indeed be fighting on the May 5 Cinco de Mayo date. The question is, will he be fighting Mayweather?
