Upon receiving word that Floyd Mayweather said he'd be willing to fight him at 150 pounds, middleweight king Sergio Martinez wasted no time in accepting the offer. "I will accept Mayweather's challenge at 150 to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I would love to fight Mayweather at 150 at the end of the year," he commented in a recent interview. Although he began his career as a welterweight, Martinez currently fights in the 160-pound division and has not fought as low as 150 pounds in nearly 9 years. Although it might be difficult for him to make the weight, it's a chance that Martinez will gladly take if it means he'll finally get the big fight he's been hoping for. First up, however, is a March 17 middleweight clash with Matthew Macklin.
"At this moment though, what I really want is to take care of business on March 17, and then everything will come down to being Mayweather or Chavez. I've said yesterday, today, and I'll say tomorrow that the only real champion that will fight Sergio Martinez is Floyd Mayweather," Martinez continued. That being said, there's still no guarantee that Mayweather will be up for a fight with Martinez later this year, particularly since he's due to start serving a 90-day jail sentence on June 1. Regardless, Martinez is also willing to make the move up north to face another undefeated fighter in Andre Ward at a catchweight. "He's another great fighter that I'd love to fight, but right now, I'm only thinking about March 17, however, I'd meet him at 164 for it," he added.
