"I'm back in the ring on May 5th and I will beat him," commented WBA Jr. Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who waisted no time in updating his official Twitter page moments after undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather was granted a conditional one-fight boxing license by the Nevada State Athletic commission. With the last hurdle now cleared, the two will face off on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. After looking impressive in his TKO victory over Antonio Margarito this past December, Cotto was rumored to be in talks with both Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Initially, it looked as though he was leaning towards a June 9 rematch with Pacquiao, however, a disagreement in weight may have swayed Cotto's decision. While he was willing to come down to 150 pounds, Pacquiao refused to fight any higher than the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. Apparently Mayweather, however, has no problems moving up to face Cotto in his own division at the jr. middleweight limit of 154 pounds. Cotto became a promotional free agent at the beginning of the year when his contract with Top Rank ran out, and a fight with Mayweather has been something he's wanted a long time. On May 5, he'll finally get his opportunity and he sounds confident about the outcome.
