"I mean, everybody wants to fight Mayweather or Pacquiao, but realistically, I think Devon has definitely earned the right to at least get the winner of Ortiz/Berto. That's the fight that we want. I think Devon deserves that fight and I think that's the fight the fans want to see," stated Devon Alexander's world-class trainer Kevin Cunningham, who made it crystal clear that they're looking to face the winner of the upcoming rematch between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto. Alexander is fresh off of an impressive welterweight debut, dominating Marcos Maidana over the course of 10 rounds to score a unanimous decision, winning essentially every round on all three scorecards. It was a performance that saw him defeat the hard-hitting Argentine slugger far more convincingly than anyone else has, a fact that Cunningham is fully aware of.
"I mean, Marcos Maidana just destroyed Victor Ortiz, he basically beat him into submission and made him quit, and in the Khan fight, Maidana basically had him out on his feet in the 10th round, so I mean, this guy looked like the big, bad monster and Devon just beat him basically into submission," Cunnnigham explained. "So, you know, if he [Alexander] can't get the two superstars, which is Mayweather and Pacquiao, I think the only logical fight for Devon and the fight that he has earned is the Ortiz/Berto winner. Anything less than the Ortiz/Berto winner is basically going backwards."
