"We're not really at the end yet, but we slowly getting there," Floyd Mayweather commented, reflecting on the fact that he recently celebrated his 35th birthday. Although he's still has many more fights left in him, nothing lasts forever and he's already taking note of the future stars of the sport. "Some day I'm going to hand the torch to another young fighter. It could be Yuri Gamboa, it could be Broner, we just don't know. I'd love to hand the throne to one of those fighters," he continued, speaking to reporters gathered around him as he held court during yesterday's press conference to promote "Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto".
Interestingly enough, Gamboa recently paid Mayweather a visit a couple of weeks ago. Furthermore, Mayweather was also in attendance for Broner's title-winning performance two fights ago. The fact that Mayweather has taken notice of the younger fighters is a distinction that each one will no be proud of, particularly Broner, who has already drawn comparisons to Mayweather's fighting style and flashy attitude in and out of the ring. Mayweather, however, still thinks there's a lot for both fighters to learn and they would wise not to get too far ahead of themselves or take their training for granted.
"I've seen Broner fight a few times and as of right now, he's still in a learning stage. Even though he's champion, he's still in the learning stage because fighters don't understand when it's at this level, it's different," Mayweather added. Nevertheless, given the persona that both Broner and Gamboa are developing in their fast-rising careers, it should be no suprise that the older Mayweather sees a little bit of himself in each fighter.
