BRYAN PEREZ: "WE HAVE THE BLUEPRINT TO BEAT FLOYD MAYWEATHER...MIGUEL IS READY"

By Percy Crawford | April 13, 2012
BRYAN PEREZ:

"Miguel has always said that he wants to fight the best names out there, so Floyd Mayweather was the best out there and the best guarantee for him, so that's why he accepted the challenge. He has an undefeated record and he's known as the best pound for pound, so it means a lot and it's a big challenge and brings a lot of motivation for Miguel. That's why we took this on for Miguel and he's getting ready to put on the fight of his life...We have a great team. We have a great, great trainer who is known by a lot of people in the amateur world. He has a great game plan and we trust him and follow him and you will see. You will be surprised and the world will be surprised because we have the blueprint to beat Floyd Mayweather and win...Mentally, Miguel is ready. Miguel is really focused on this fight and I haven't seen him for many, many years and many, many fights be motivated like this," stated Bryan Perez, Executive Director of Miguel Cotto Promotions and best friend of the WBA jr. middleweight champion, who talked about the upcoming May 5th showdown with undefeated pound for pound champion Floyd Mayweather. Check it out!

PC: Before we even get into Cotto/Mayweather, your appearance has changed drastically from the first time we saw you on 24/7. How is the new look and lifestyle going?

BP: I feel very well. I feel healthy and right, and I'm still working hard every day. I stay focused and motivated and I just keep moving forward.

PC: Was it a situation where not only was your weight unhealthy and dangerous, and I'm sure Miguel was encouraging you to lose, but you're constantly around the gym and it was just kind of the thing to do?

BP: I think, you know, I'm 32 years old right now. I was always overweight and I began to have some health issues and the only choice I had was to do something with myself and my weight. If I kept going the way I was living, I was not going to be here anymore, you know?

PC: Definitely.

BP: And then I chose to do the gastric bypass surgery as an alternative. I took it very serious. I did everything that my doctor said and everything possible to assure that things would go right and accomplish our goals of having like 215 down and 150 to go.

PC: That's great, man. Congratulations on that for sure. What is the biggest difference that you feel now that you have took the weight off?

BP: I think the biggest difference is the energy that I have now that I didn't feel maybe a year ago. That's crazy to me. I can work out hard; I can run and do stuff that I never did before. I'm experiencing things that I never have, and of course the clothing is crazy. I look back and I say, "Wow, I was really heavy," you know? I just want to be motivation for all of the people that are obese. This is the chance and if you work hard and you do the right things, you can make it happen.

PC: Are you having to beat the women off of you out there in Puerto Rico now or what (laughing)?

BP: (Laughing) I'm engaged, I'm engaged, so I cannot play around (laughing).

PC: Congrats on that too. A ton of good news coming from you and it's well deserved my man. Being Miguel's best friend, what was it like to sit at ringside and watch him redeem himself against Antonio Margarito after what Margarito had done to him?

BP: I think it helped put Margarito in the past. We have already passed that page. Margarito took what he deserved from Miguel. I think that he beat everything out of him on December 3rd. But he don't have nothing. He was Antonio Margarito when he beat Miguel with the gloves, but now, what is Margarito right now? He is a nobody to us.

PC: And now it's Floyd Mayweather, a fight that a lot of people have wanted to see for a long time. You guys had several options, including a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. Obviously facing an undefeated Mayweather is enough fuel to not re-sign with Top Rank and take other fights, but what made the Mayweather fight make the most sense for you guys?

BP: I think when we were trying to choose our next fight, Miguel has always said that he wants to fight the best names out there, so Floyd Mayweather was the best out there and the best guarantee for him, so that's why he accepted the challenge. He has an undefeated record and he's known as the best pound for pound, so it means a lot and it's a big challenge and brings a lot of motivation for Miguel. That's why we took this on for Miguel and he's getting ready to put on the fight of his life.

PC: How is training going for Miguel only a few weeks out from fight time now, and how do you prepare for someone with no blueprint on how to defeat him?

BP: We have a great team. We have a great, great trainer who is known by a lot of people in the amateur world. He has a great game plan and we trust him and follow him and you will see. You will be surprised and the world will be surprised because we have the blueprint to beat Floyd Mayweather and win.

PC: He was so emotionally invested in his last fight against Margarito, as we mentioned earlier. He shares a mutual respect for Floyd, but as Floyd said in the face off, you can't be fooled by that. Mentally, how is he approaching this fight?

BP: Mentally, Miguel is ready. Miguel is really focused on this fight and I haven't seen him for many, many years and many, many fights be motivated like this. I can't wait and we can't wait to see the fight.

PC: With all of the 24/7 stuff and the promotional tour, as his manager, how physically and mentally exhausting is this process for you?

BP: You know, it's a lot of work. We have a lot of work on our back to set up the training camp and work with everything else, and also to accomplish the goals for the promotion, but we enjoy every single aspect of the fight and of the promotion. We just have a great time doing it. We have great communication with the 24/7 staff and I think it's been incredible from day one with all of the things we have done. We have done a lot of things and I have mucho respect for all of the staff that works there and the staff has great respect for us. We have great chemistry and I think that makes things easier than they appear to be.

PC: This may be a crazy question, but is the goal to knock out Floyd Mayweather on May 5th, or simply to walk away with Miguel's hand raised that night?

BP: The goal is the victory on May 5th; that's the goal.

PC: Bryan, I appreciate your time. I know it's getting very hectic for you guys right now, so it's much appreciated. Is there anything else you want to say before I let you go my man?

BP: No, I want to thank everybody from FightHype; thank you all. We will be seeing you and everybody on May 5th. You can't miss this one!
