FH EXCLUSIVE: BOONDOCKVIDEOBy Tony Naemi | January 11, 2008
| FightHype.com recently got the chance to speak with legendary MMA highlight-maker Boondock. If you don't know who this is, you're missing out on some of the greatest MMA highlight footage on the internet. Check it out.
TN: Where did the name Boondock come from?
BD: I needed a name for an internet forum and after a few lame ideas, I just started looking around my office for something to spark a name greater than "FedorFan4353." Someone had returned the movie "Boondock Saints" to me and I decided to shorten it to see what would happen. "Boondock" wasn't taken and the rest is history.
TN: How did you get into MMA and MMA highlights?
BD: I got into martial arts as a young kid training kung-fu of all things. It's funny looking back on it because half the time, we'd watch a Bruce Lee movie on one day and be training the moves the next. Later on, I saw an early UFC and fell in love with it and, as stupid as this sounds, I got hooked on Pride when I got a subscription to Netflix and thought I'd check out this "Japanese fighting stuff". It wasn't until moving to Atlanta that I got the chance to begin training BJJ and some MMA. I got involved in MMA highlight making by simply being a fan of the sport. I watched a lot of Pride to catch up and one thing Pride did was have great camera angles that I thought would make great highlights. After seeing a Robby P and Mick B highlight, I knew I had to try it. I have NO real training when it comes to video editing so I've had to feel my way through the process. I think that's helped me a bit because I tend to put together a more organic, emotional highlight than a technically correct one.
TN: What has been your most popular video to date?
BD: Most popular has to be "Furious Angels". It's blown up and I was very surprised at the reaction. My personal favorite is "3rd Man", which was a video that came out of an extremely emotional time of my life that got reflected in the highlight.
TN: What has the reaction from the fans been to your videos?
BD: Very good. My mom shows her friends so my fanbase has grown to about 6 now. Honestly, the reactions been great though. There's always the guys that hate for hate's sake or simply don't like the music and I respect that, but overall, it's been good. I'd say that about 10 people in the world know who I really am and they think it's kind of funny that people "know me" online. I think it's pretty funny myself. I've been at fights and heard people talk about Boondock and not know that I was standing next to them.
TN: How have the fighters reacted to your videos?
BD: (laughing) Depends on who you ask! James Thompson didn't react too well at first to the video I made of him, but after I convinced him not to kill me, we've actually become cool. I owe him a real highlight. Other fighters I've talked to have been Bas Rutten and he was very encouraging. He's a legend that I'd love to give an amazing highlight video dedicated to. Mauro Renallo has dropped me a line and Jason "Mayhem" Miller wrote me asking about "3rd Man" so the response has been better than I would have thought. Then again, I don't expect Wanderlei to be telling me "good job" after seeing videos like my "Chuck vs. Wand Promo #1", but that's part of it. I also show a lot of fighters struggling or losing in my highlights and I'm not sure how they take that, especially after seeing themselves on the mat in a video. "Hey Boondock, loved the new highlight, thanks for showing the world how I got pounded out."
TN: What is the coolest thing to come from all this?
BD: Talking to guys like Thompson or Rutten makes it fun, as well as the reaction from the online MMA fans. I've made a lot of friends and met a lot of cool people along the way and things like the JTWarWagon (fan club dedicated to James Thompson) have been fun even though it's full of idiot savants like myself. I've actually never made any money off of a video, but I did get a great BasRutten.tv t-shirt and a friend entered me into a highlight competition on Fedor's website that won me a signed poster and picture (thanks Kuso). Other than that, I'm just hoping it continues to develop. I'd love to move ahead and work on some bigger projects or even get into the MMA industry itself. We'll see.
TN: Anything new coming out?
BD: Kind of...I've got a few ideas and about 3 videos that are partly done, but nothing close enough to really say I have something ready. I was just happy to get "Hurt" finished and I'm ready to do something a little more fun and light-hearted next.
TN: Anything you'd like to say to your fans?
BD: (laughing) All 6 of them? If I could say anything to the people who've spent 3+ minutes watching one of my highlight videos, thanks! Thanks for the time, thanks for the feedback and thanks for being fans of the sport of MMA. I'm such a passionate fan myself that I just like being a part of the community and hopefully I can help add something to it at the end of the day.
