"Roman is going to be an explosive fighter and aggressive because he wants to win too. I think I should be the favored, hopefully, but when a fighter like Roman is coming off of a loss like he did, that's when they get more dangerous. They want to fight harder and prove everybody wrong, so I expect that from him. That's why I'm training so hard. I'm getting ready; ready for war, man. I'm ready to go to war and put on a good show for the fans," stated lightweight contender Ray Beltran, who talked about his upcoming clash with Roman Martinez on the April 12 undercard of Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2. Check it out!
PC: You have a big fight coming up on April 12th on the Pacquiao/Bradley card against Roman Martinez. How has preparation been going?
RB: So far so good. I feel in great shape, you know, and just waiting for April 12th. I have 3 more hard weeks and then we are done.
PC: Obviously this is an important fight for you, but are you looking at this fight as a way of erasing the memory of the Ricky Burns fight, which many consider the Robbery of the Year last year?
RB: That memory will never be erased because that was my time to shine and that got taken away. But I move on, you know. I use those things to get stronger and fight harder. That's what I did after that fight; I went right to the gym and just kept training.
PC: You haven't fought since September of last year. Would you have liked to come back a little sooner or is this perfect timing?
RB: I would have liked to come back earlier, but things happen for a reason. It's good for me. I have nothing to complain about. It's a good fight on a great event, so it couldn't be better for me, you know.
PC: For sure, man. You are definitely accustomed to hostile territory coming from the UK to fight Burns, but this is probably the biggest stage you have ever been on. How do you treat this like just another fight?
RB: I think in every fight, it's an experience. I will be prepared. In my last fight with Ricky, everybody was against me. At least in this fight, I will have some people on my side and have my back. I'm ready. It's just the right moment and I have been waiting for it my whole life.
PC: Talk a little bit about Roman Martinez as an opponent. He will be hungry coming off of the Mikey Garcia knockout loss. What do you think of him as an opponent?
RB: Well, you know what? I don't really think about him much. I don't even worry about him. I don't even watch video on him. I worry about myself more than I do my opponents. I will see 2 or 3 rounds to see his style and that's it. He fought my cousin, Miguel Beltran, and I was in my cousin's corner. I don't take him lightly at all. I don't take my opponents lightly because that's the biggest mistake you can make. I just worry about myself, like I said. I train different techniques and by the time the fight comes, we will be ready to do what we have to do. I have to worry about myself and be ready. I don't make plans because when you study a guy, you may think he fights a certain way and he changes it up. I just work at the gym and I don't make any plans. I just adjust during the moment of the fight. I will be ready for whatever.
PC: The Hank Lundy fight really put you into the boxing public eye. Now you are on one of the biggest event cards of the year. How does it feel to have everything come full circle?
RB: I was thinking about that. Two years ago, before the Lundy fight, it was a big difference. I didn't know where my career was gonna go. I didn't have luck on my side. I was getting robbed. It feels great, man, and I feel a lot of satisfaction that I proved a lot of people wrong. First of all, I wanted to prove that I am a world-class fighter and I think I did. Sometimes it only takes one person to say something and everybody believes it and people start to think negative about you. They were saying I fight with a sparring partner mentality, but they don't know what it means. How can they know my life? People judge you. It's natural to judge because people don't care what's going on in your life. To me, to prove all of those people who thought negative of me or didn't believe in me, I proved them wrong and that, to me, was a big accomplishment and now I have to prove to myself that I could be a world champion.
PC: What does it mean for you to show people that you are at this level?
RB: You know what? After this last fight, I know what it feels to be a world champion, you know. I beat Burns and I should be the world champion right now. Politics played me and right now, I want to be recognized by the people and the fans. What really matters at the end of the day is my name, not a title. My name will be remembered and that's what I want to do. Once you become a real known fighter, you don't really need titles anymore.
PC: What type of fight are you expecting from Roman?
RB: I think Roman is going to be an explosive fighter and aggressive because he wants to win too. I think I should be the favored, hopefully, but when a fighter like Roman is coming off of a loss like he did, that's when they get more dangerous. They want to fight harder and prove everybody wrong, so I expect that from him. That's why I'm training so hard. I'm getting ready; ready for war, man. I'm ready to go to war and put on a good show for the fans.
PC: I look forward to your fight and best of luck to you next month. Is there anything else you want to say?
RB: I want to thank you for the time to talk to me and I want to thank all of the fans who will read this. I want to thank all of my Mexican fans and tell them to be there or watch the event. We're gonna put on a good show. I will put on a good show!
