FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.: "YOU'LL SEE A MUCH BETTER FIGHT AT 147 THAN YOU SAW AT 154"

By Percy Crawford | April 03, 2008
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.:

"He's weighing 151. They are fighting at 150 so he won't have no problem making 147. I'm here to tell you, get ready to see a new and improved Oscar De La Hoya. I think he'll do better against my son at 147," stated legendary trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he gave an update on Oscar De La Hoya's preparations for his May 3rd fight with Steve Forbes. Don't miss what else he had to say as he reveals that he may not be working with Zab Judah after all and shares his thoughts on Hopkins-Calzaghe, what happened between Steve Forbes and Roger Mayweather as well as his son's participation in Wrestlemania 24, stating, "From what I understand, he's supposed to do 2 or 3 more of them things that he did with them. My whole thing is he didn't get hurt so that was good. He could do what he feels like he wants to do. When the fight comes, we'll be ready." Check it out!

PC: How's everything going in Puerto Rico? How is everything looking?

FM: Everything is cool man. Oscar is looking good. He's looking sharper every day. That's the main thing that I wanted to see and I'm seeing a lot of progress in his game. I'm working on a lot of things with him and he's coming around man; he's doing good.

PC: Has he been sparring up there?

FM: Yeah, yeah, yeah! He's a month into sparring.

PC: What did you think of Lil Floyd making Roger remove himself as Steve Forbes trainer?

FM: What do I think about that? I think he's an ass. I think he's an ass for doing that and I think RogerÂ…I wouldn't have belittled myself and went back to him. I would've did the same thing I did with Oscar and Lil Floyd; I would've walked off. That's what I would've did. That's me man. That's my make up man. I'm direct to the fact. It ain't no backlashing with me man. There's only 3 ways with me and I'm going to tell you those 3 ways. It's my way, the highway and no other way.  Them are the 3 ways.

PC: That move made Roger look worse than it made Lil Floyd look.

FM: Yeah! My thing is he couldn't have did me that way man; whatever it is. Man, look here, at the end of the day, it ain't all about money. Everything ain't all about money man; you have to have some dignity in yourself.

PC: I didn't understand why he would wait so late to do that.

FM: We all trained Steve before at some point or another, but it wasn't that serious. It wasn't that serious to where he had to tell Roger to close shop on Steve; it wasn't that serious. I wouldn't have done that, but people are different and that's his choice and he did what he had to do or what he felt like he had to do, but I would've never did that. I would've walked the muddy waters and sleep out in a hollow log before I let him do that to me. It ain't that serious with me.

PC: Did you watch his wrestling match at Wrestlemainia?

FM: Nah man. I ain't watch that shit man. That wasn't nothing to watch. As a matter of fact, I already knew he was going to win anyway. Everybody talking about that 20 million; he didn't get no 20 million dollars for that.

PC: Me and my boy were talking about that and we figured he didn't get that much.

FM: I'm telling you now, I could've been told you that he wasn't getting that much money for that. He got way less than that. That wasn't nothing but a hoax anyway. That wasn't nothing. I think he supposed to have some type of thing hooked up with them. From what I understand, he's supposed to do 2 or 3 more of them things that he did with them. My whole thing is he didn't get hurt so that was good. He could do what he feels like he wants to do. When the fight comes, we'll be ready.

PC: What do you think are Forbes biggest strengths coming into this fight?

FM: I'm going to be honest with you man, he's pretty cagey, but I've trained him for about 8 or 9 fights. Even though I feel like he's cagey, I don't look at the fight no other way but me winning. He kind of cagey, but he don't pack a punch. I don't think he's faster than Oscar either. Oscar got the reach and I think Oscar's big enough to pretty much pick his jab off and go straight forward and the only way I see the fight going is us winning. To be honest, Oscar been looking good and better and better and I don't see it no other way but Oscar's way. I pretty much know man because I done trained him too.

PC: Who do you like in the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight?

FM: (Laughing) I'm going to be honest now. I think that Calzaghe may end up throwing too many punches. Hopkins is an old man and he can fool you though. Calzaghe has a hard pace to keep up with and he has speed. He throws punches like a smaller guy. Technically, I don't even like Calzaghe. He throws a lot of slap punches and it's possible that Bernard can maybe land a couple of hard shots and get him out of there early. It's going to come down to preparation.

PC: What's the deal with Zab Judah? When you get back into the States, are you going to go train with him?

FM: I think I'm going to stay out of that man. The only reason I say I probably will stay out of it is because that's too short of a time. I don't think it will be enough time to work with him and do what I need to do. I have to have time with a fighter. I don't give a damn what kind of money they giving me. From what I understand, they went up to Big Bear. If I was there, I think Zab could win it, but I don't know man. I really can't even speak on that right now. Before I could tell you Zab going to do this and Zab going to do that, but I can't say that now. I have to wait and see like everybody else. I may have time. When is that fight?

PC: May 31st.

FM: We'll see. His thing is he could win if he gets in shape, but I don't think they've figured out how to get him in shape. That has been his problem most of the time; lack of conditioning. You don't train, you definitely don't have to worry about winning; that's all I can tell you. That's a true statement all day long.

PC: How's Oscar's weight looking?

FM: He on weight right now. He's weighing 151. They are fighting at 150 so he won't have no problem making 147. I'm here to tell you, get ready to see a new and improved Oscar De La Hoya. I think he'll do better against my son at 147. He'll do better at 47 because that's more of his natural weight. He can fight at 54 because he has the height to carry it, but he's trim and cut up at 147. He's also a faster fighter at that weight. I think you'll see a much better fight at 147 than you saw at 154.

PC: How much you weighing these days Big Floyd?

FM: I weight about 156.

PC: You don't let your weight get too high huh?

FM: No, no, no! I don't work out every day, but I hit me a few crunches and a couple of pushups, but that's about it. That right there keeps me where I need to be; keeps the blood running and that's good for me. I'm in immaculate shape right now. I tell you one thing, I ain't scared to pull this shirt off. Yeah though Percy, it's a few things I want to correct with Oscar and we're off and rolling man. Trust me!
