VIC DARCHINYAN: "I WOULD LIKE TO FIGHT CRISTIAN MIJARES"

By Percy Crawford | August 04, 2008
VIC DARCHINYAN:

"I would like to fight Cristian Mijares and get the WBA championship. He's got 2 belts and I have the IBF so I would like to fight him and become the undisputed world champion and that's why I want to make him my opponent now. I want to fight him and put everything on the line," stated newly crowned IBF super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan as he talked about about his desire to unify the titles with WBA & WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares. Check out what else he had to say as he talks about his impressive win this past weekend against Dmitri Kirilov, his future plans, including a rematch with IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, and much more.

PC: Congratulations on capturing the IBF super flyweight title.

VD: Thank you!

PC: How do you feel about your performance?

VD: I feel good, thank you. I trained good. I did what I wanted to do. I promised my fans I was going to knock him out and I kept my promise.

PC: It seems like you're adjusting to this new weight pretty well. Are you comfortable here?

VD: I think I'm going to be more comfortable at this weight. I think I will stay here for a little while before we think about moving up again. I've always sparred with heavier opponents so that helped out a lot. I can see my power will follow me as I move up.

PC: Coming off of the draw with Gorres, how important was it for you to not only get a victory, but to do so in impressive fashion?

VD: It was very important. When I was a kid, I wanted to become a world champion and now I want to become an undisputed champion, you know?

PC: When did you sense in this fight that you would be too much for Kirilov?

VD: I knew I was more powerful than he was. He fights like all of the Russian fighters do. I like the Russian style and it fits my style. I just think, right from the beginning, I was too strong for him and I'm happy with my performance.

PC: You now have that IBF strap. What would you like to do next?

VD: I would like to fight Cristian Mijares and get the WBA championship. He's got 2 belts and I have the IBF so I would like to fight him and become the undisputed world champion and that's why I want to make him my opponent now. I want to fight him and put everything on the line. I will fight for my title and he's going to fight for his title and I will become world champion. You could only have one world champion; you shouldn't have many world champions. I want to make it one.

PC: Was the fight over when you realized that Kirilov couldn't hurt you? Were you ever hurt?

VD: I don't even think he punched me to hurt me. I searched my face and I remembered he hit me with a headbutt in the middle of the round and that was the only thing that happened to my face, but as far as him hurting me, I can't say that.

PC: What do you think his gameplan coming into this fight was?

VD: I think his gameplan wasÂ…one time, I got hit by Nonito Donaire by accident. He's not a better fighter than me, but sometimes in boxing, you lose to someone that's not better than you. I thought I had him hurt and so I went in to finish the job and he hit me with a left hook. I think Kirilov thought he would catch me coming in with that same left hook. I could see Kirilov thinking I was going to punch him and then he would come with his left hook (laughing). I was laughing at that. I have 24 years in boxing. I'm not going to make the same mistake.

PC: Vic, you're one of the rare fighters who's still around that just seems to love fighting. Do you think that's the case?

VD: Yeah, I love fights. I love excitement. I don't like the boring fights because people don't pay to see that. Boxing is a fight and you're going to punch each other. I'm always trying to end it in one round. I always look at my opponents to finish them. Some fighters go in there and just want to outpoint their opponents on the scorecards, but I just want to destroy them, you know?

PC: Great performance Vic. It was good to see you back in your groove. Good luck in landing that Mijares fight. Is there anything you want to say in closing?

VD: Thank you very much to you and all of the support I received. I will continue to show them more technique, more skill and more power; that's how I'm going to do it. If this Mijares fight does happen, I promise everyone they're going to get a great fight. Mijares may not be very exciting, he just makes sure he keeps touching you, but he keeps you busy, you know? If he fights me, I'm going to show you guys something special because I'm going to make him punch with me and not run. I'm not going to let him run from me. I'm going to make him fight.
