MIKE BROWN: "I WILL IMPOSE MY GAME ON HIM!"

By Percy Crawford | August 11, 2008
MIKE BROWN:

"I'm going to put my game on him and move forward, put pressure on him and look for the big shots. I don't usually try to score points with the little shots. I try to go hard and that's what I'm going to do," stated WEC featherweight contender Mike Brown as he talked about his upcoming title clash with champion Urijah Faber. Check out what else he had to say about the fight, Faber and much more.

PC: How has everything been going since the big win over Jeff Curran?

MB: Hey, things are good. Everything is falling into place, you know? It got me a title shot so I can't complain.

PC: Did you think defeating Curran would earn you that shot or did you think it would take a couple more fights?

MB: Originally, I thought I was going to have to do one more. They told me on my third one I would get a title shot, but I think some of the other guys they had planned on giving the shot to fell off. I honestly think they were going to get Pequeno because he dominated the weight class for years. Him getting knocked off, I think put me in line.

PC:  Did the Curran fight go as planned? Did you accomplish everything you wanted to in that fight?

MB: I wanted to do a little more standup, but I was getting hit with a few more shots than I thought I would. But I can't complain with a win. He's a real tough guy so I'm happy about it.

PC: September 10th you will fight Urijah Faber for the WEC 145-pound title. How are you feeling coming into this fight?

MB: It's going to be a tough fight. It's one of those fights where if you go in there and perform, you could win and if not, you will lose. I gotta be on that night. I have to make sure everything is right in my life and training is going good and perform that night and it will be alright.

PC: How long have you been in a serious training camp for this fight?

MB: I've been training hard for the last 3 and half weeks. He's good and unpredictable so I'm just going to do what I do. I'm going to put my game on him and move forward, put pressure on him and look for the big shots. I don't usually try to score points with the little shots. I try to go hard and that's what I'm going to do. I will impose my game on him; that's the plan.

PC: Were you impressed by his standup? Everyone thought he would just take Jens down, but his boxing was very impressive. Do you think he will try to fight you the same way?

MB: I expected him to try to take Pulver down and I think he tried to for the first couple of minutes of the fight, but he was having trouble getting Pulver down so he decided to strike. He did really well and looked really good at it so I'm sure he's got some newfound confidence in his standup after the Pulver fight. He showed a new set of skills that people probably didn't know he was capable of. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to standup.

PC: Urijah seems to be such a complete fighter. Every fighter has holes in their game to a degree. Are there any in Urijah's that stand out to you?

MB: No, I don't see a glaring hole anywhere in Urijah's game. You have to try and make a hole, put your stuff together and set something up. He doesn't have a glaring hole in his game I don't think.

PC: Urijah has had 6 or 7 fights in the WEC while this is only going to be your second. Do you think that adds pressure to him because he has the WEC experience and the name or do you think your lack of experience in the WEC puts the pressure on you?

MB: It's way more pressure on him. I'm the big underdog here. I have nothing to lose. I'm just going to go out and do my thing and see what happens.

PC: You haven't lost a fight in over 3 years and he's only lost one in his entire career. What would winning that title and giving Urijah his second career loss mean to you?

MB: It would be the highlight of my athletic career, for sure. He's the #1 guy in the world so it would be very sweet.

PC: Good luck in September. I'm sure we'll speak again before the fight. Is there anything you want to close off with?

MB: I just want to thank American Top Team in Coconut Creek; it's the best team in the world. Tapout, Champion Nutrition and Fightconnect.com. Those are the people that helped me out.
