"He's one of the worst trainers in the world that I've ever seen in my life
He ain't even got no business calling my name when he talks about training. He says I can't teach him nothing, but I bet he would see how much of a better fighter Hatton would be. He wouldn't be the only fighter Hatton's age that got better with me. It's all in the individual and what they want to learn," stated world-renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he fired back at some recent comments made by Ricky Hatton's former trainer Billy Graham. Check out what else he had to say about Graham, the possibility of training Hatton and much more.
PC: Billy Graham said he didn't think you were the guy for Hatton. What are your thoughts on Billy Graham as well as those comments?
FM: I can train him blindfolded with both hands tied behind my back. That's what I want to tell Billy Graham. He's one of the worst trainers in the world that I've ever seen in my life.
PC: The thing that's funny to me is that Lil Floyd fights with your style and Hatton has been fighting with Graham's style and we saw what happened there.
FM: Exactly. That's another thing you can put in there. You seen my style against his style and you seen what happened. It was a disaster.
PC: In the article, he said he didn't think you could teach Hatton anything at this stage of his career.
FM: Maybe I can't teach him nothing new, but he can't teach at all. You can blindfold me, tie both of my hands and legs and I'll still outtrain him so that tells you what I think about his training. If Ricky didn't have the heart and determination that he has, it would be sad. This man can't even hold pads. He's a trainer and he holds a pillow and can only let his fighters throw one shot at a time. Man, come on man. That's one of the reasons right there that I can't give him any respect. He can't even use both of his hands. He's just a jealous, old-looking fool, that's all. That man's running around here and he can't spell box and he wants to talk about Floyd can't teach him; it ain't no accident that Hatton got rid of him. It was evident and has been in the works for a long time. He was just the last one to get it; that's what it is. It was over damn near when he got him. He better be grateful because he got rich off of doing shit. He got rich off of doing nothing and that's a true statement right there. He don't even train fighters. He just sits around and smokes cigars and cigarettes. Man, shit! That man's crazy.
He's not on my level. I done forgot more than he will ever learn. He gotta start with the basics because that shit that he's doing with fighters
man, please! He gotta start at the basics because he doesn't even do the basics good. I bet his phone doesn't ring at all and I always tell you that you can tell a trainer's worth by how many times his phone rings. I'm loaded right now and people are still coming to me and that's the Gods honest truth. I'm loaded with fighters right now man. I was telling you about the guy earlier that wants me to train his guy. I gave him one price and he offered me way more to train his guy. Who do you think's blowing Billy's phone up like that? He wasn't getting calls when Hatton was a champion; you know he isn't getting any now. Hatton's brother been done got rid of his ass and Ricky Hatton done finally got smart. If he can't get Ricky Hatton back and train him, then he should just retire. I have 3 guys that are TV fighters coming up: De La Hoya, Forbes and Guzman. Do I look like somebody that can't train? And I could have more than that. I have to turn down fighters because I can't train all of these fighters.
PC: The thing I respect about you my man is that you don't take any kind of fighter. A lot of trainers will take a lazy fighter, so to speak, just to get their money.
FM: That's me right there man. That's a true statement. I try to give some guys a little break when I see they lazy. I took a lot off of Ron (Johnson), but it's over with now though. I finally made my mind up man to leave that alone. He ain't going to do nothing man. I can't believe Graham has the nerve and the audacity to say anything about me man. A fighter will still come to me if I had my hands tied up; and don't tie them in the front, tie them in the back. A fighter will come to me if I was headless with no hands before they go to Graham.
PC: It seems like Hatton's father may have stepped in, at least that's the impression Graham is under.
FM: The daddy gotta protect his son. Ain't nobody interested in that no-training ass bum, looking like a hobo. You make sure you let them know that he's standing around smoking those cigars looking like he's 70 years old and talking about training somebody and can't even hold pads. What the hell is hitting a pillow one shot at a time going to do for a fighter? You do that shit in the military. That shit ain't got nothing to do with a fight. That man got rich and don't know shit. My name shouldn't even come out his mouth when it comes to something about training. I'm superior over a guy like him. He ain't even got no business calling my name when he talks about training. He says I can't teach him nothing, but I bet he would see how much of a better fighter Hatton would be. He wouldn't be the only fighter Hatton's age that got better with me. It's all in the individual and what they want to learn. Who wants to learn and who wants to get better? You remember when Guzman was throwing those wild punches. Look at his fight with Soto. He wasn't doing all of that. Hatton was fighting on his own man; on his guts and his pure desire to win. He fought with a lot of pressure, a lot of hard shots and his pure will to win; that's all!
