On Wednesday night, in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, Promoter Mike Indri and Dignity promotions presents Knockout Nights, featuring the return of former champion Vivian Harris as he squares off against Octavio Narvaez. FightHype recently caught up with Harris and you don't want to miss what he had to say about his past, his upcoming fight and what he expects in the future as he aims to regain a title in the jr. welterweight division.
SR: How are you feeling?
VH: I feel good. Training is going good. Training with Tommy Brooks, working on things and sharpening my tools.
SR: How is your weight?
VH: My weight is fine. Right now I'm 145.
SR: Should your fans see this as a new beginning or a continuation of your career?
VH: Fans can see me and base it on what they see. I am whole now, a complete fighter. Offense and defense. I'm learning defense now and working on breaking what I'm not supposed to do.
SR: How much confidence do you still have in yourself at this point of your career?
VH: My confidence is 150%. I'm still the best. I just don't have the belt and now I have a whole team. I'm a whole package. I have pro trainers now; I had stayed with past trainers that weren't pro trainers because of my loyalty.
SR: Are you saying that your loyalty is what kept you from advancing in your career?
VH: Yeah, I was with people that...we all grew up together and had an attitude like, "let's get this money together," but now I have Tommy teaching me not to do stupid things like pulling straight back with my hands down, setting up with my jab and moving my body.
SR: So what's the difference between Tommy Brooks and Emanuel Steward?
VH: No difference. They are great trainers, but with Tommy, he is there all the time and his assistants are on the same page so if Tommy is not there, we do the same thing. The whole team works together; they are world-class. I believe in God and all this is happening at the right time for me.
SR: Who are your sparring partners for this fight?
VH: I sparred a lot of guys. Yuri Foreman is the main one I've sparred a lot.
SR: How have the gym workouts been since Oscar Diaz's injury? (Brooks was Diaz's trainer)
VH: Sad man, very sad. We come in, train hard; we are closer, like family. We are all a little down, but we realize we have to keep on moving. We keep thinking about him every day. Boxing is a tough sport and we train hard to do our best to prevent that from happening to us.
SR: What do you know about your opponent?
VH: He comes to fight. I need my defense. I need to fight smart. My offense and defense is going to be an A+.
SR: How far you from stepping up in competition?
VH: I feel I'm ready for a title now, but we got this fight. I could fight a top contender after just one fight back. After the layoff, I wanted no warm-up, but I do have a guy that comes to fight.
SR: How do you see the fight with Hatton and your friend Malignaggi playing out on November 22nd?
VH: I think Paulie can win if he fights with good defense like he does. If he stays away like usual. I don't want him to exchange and mix it up with Ricky. I think Cotto is better than Hatton. Cotto could pop. I want Paulie to fight like Floyd fought and we saw what happened. I don't think Paulie will stop him, but you never know.
SR: Closing thoughts?
VH: I want to tell my fans that Vivian is back! Vivian is happy! Gotta thank Big D promotions; I'm happy to be part of the show. Hope everyone comes out.
