ASHLEY THEOPHANE: "I SHOULD NICKNAME ZAB, ZAB 'NO BALLS' JUDAH"By Percy Crawford | November 06, 2008
 |
| "Zab Judah was going around saying he was going to knock me out in 1 round, but when his people did their research on me, they thought I was too risky for his comeback fight...Zab has skills, but in the ring, when the going gets tough, he quits. Cotto, Clottey, Mayweather Jr. & Baidomir all beat him down. I would have done the same. Ernest Jones? Please...I was gonna tear Judah apart...by turning down a fight, he wasn't representing Brooklyn," stated jr. welterweight contender Ashley Theophane as he talked about Zab Judah unwillingness to face him this Saturday on the undercard of Calzaghe vs. Jones. You definitely don't want to miss what else he had to say as he puts Judah on blast, questions his choice of Ernest Johnson as his opponent and wonders if he truly does represent Brooklyn. Check it out!
PC: How's it going Ashley?
AT: It's going good. Been working hard in the gym and keeping my fitness levels and conditioning up as I have a fight on Miranda Carter's Left Jab Promotion December 6th card at York Hall in London, UK.
PC: You were supposed to be fighting Zab Judah Saturday night. What happened to that fight?
AT: What happened to that fight? It was crazy! Zab Judah was going around saying he was going to knock me out in 1 round, but when his people did their research on me, they thought I was too risky for his comeback fight. In NYC, people know I don't play so he would have had a hard nights work this Saturday. I should nickname Zab, Zab "No Balls" Judah.
PC: You think Judah ducked you for an easier challenge?
AT: He is boxing Ernest Johnson now. Please! The guy is a lightweight and has never beaten no one. Even though I only have Chop Chop on my record, for years I have been sparring and mixing it up with top level guys in the gym. Salita, El Gato, Olusegun, Guzman, all the top guys!
PC: Judah is 2-4 in his last 6. Do you think you were avoided for them to try and assure Zab a win?
AT: Of course! I was a Judah fan when he was coming up. I still like his mentality that he'll fight anyone, but fighting me doesn't make sense. I am too high a risk. He wants a world title fight at Jr. Welterweight soon. I would have killed that idea. Zab has skills, but in the ring, when the going gets tough, he quits. Cotto, Clottey, Mayweather Jr. & Baidomir all beat him down. I would have done the same. Ernest Jones? Please! That is a HBO PPV fight? I bring the UK with me when I fight; fans and press. Who does Ernest bring?
PC: How disappointing was it for you not to be able to land this fight?
AT: I can't lie. The night Square Ring told me it wasn't going to happen, I was real pissed. I was in form in the gym as I was running up the Pocono Mountains and sparring with WBA NO. 2 Dmitry Salita doing 4-minute rounds with 30 seconds rest. I felt like a beast in my sessions. I was gonna tear Judah apart. Plus, being on my all-time favorite fighter Roy Jones Jr.'s undercard on HBO at Madison Square Garden, it doesn't get much bigger so I would have ticked a lot of achievements with that one fight. But everything happens for a reason and Team Theophane keeps it moving.
PC: Do you know anything about Ernest Johnson that could possibly be a threat to Zab in this fight?
AT: Ernest Johnson is a lightweight and poses zero threat. Boring fight! I'll probably get a drink while that fight is on. Waste of time! Zab has been beaten up twice at the Garden by Baldomir and Cotto and he didn't want a 3rd time getting his ass kicked at the Garden by me. Other than the Jones Jr. vs. Calzaghe fight, I am looking forward to my boy El Gato boxing Emanuel Augustus. Plus I want to see how my boy Dmitry Salita gets on in his fight as he showed me love and flew me over to the States for training camp.
PC: It seemed like the perfect situation to have you and Calzaghe both on the card from the UK fighting American fighters. What was the reason you were told that the fight was off?
AT: There were many reasons. It was off and on for like 2 weeks. Money, Zab not wanting it, weight and finally paperwork that needed to get finalized, but couldn't as the fight was 12 days away when they finally wanted to finalize the fight. I think they handled the situation wrong as I had been speaking to Square Ring since August 1st, the day after I beat Chop Chop. I agreed to the fight weight, money and bent over backwards for them and then, in the end, we know what happened.
PC: What do you think of Judah as a fighter and as a person?
AT: When I was an amateur, Judah was coming up. I liked his skills, speed and power. He was known as a Pernell Whitaker type fighter and Pernell is one of my favorite boxers. Plus, he rolled around with Mike Tyson, who was the whole reason why I got into boxing, so I had respect for him as a fighter and what he achieved. He was the undisputed No. 1 welterweight for a few months so he did his stuff, but he had his time. It's over! I am based in Brooklyn. We know a lot of the same people. We can make this fight happen any time. He will always lose against the big boys and one day, he will man up and face Ashley "Treasure" Theophane and I will beat him down for the missed opportunity of fighting on Roy Jones Jr.'s undercard. I don't know him as a person so I can't comment on that.
PC: Judah is a New Yorker so essentially you would have been fighting him in his backyard. He's lost his previous 2 fights in New York. In fact, you would have to go back to 2004 for his last win in his home state. Do you think you could have defeated him in New York?
AT: When I fought Demarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, it was in New York, but he is from Washington so it's not too far away. The crowd was shouting, "USA! USA!" as they knew I am a British citizen. I beat him down in his country and the crowd was chanting Hoodstar and HotboY by the end of it. I want to fight in America so I will always be away from my people, but I like that. Beating up a man in his own backyard in front of his friends and family...no better feeling.
PC: How do you think a fight between you and Judah would have played out?
AT: For the 1st round, he may have come out and tried to knock me out. When he saw it wasn't happening, he would try to box and come with his sneaky right uppercut. Other than that, I would have broke him down the same way I broke down Chop Chop. I had a bad hand when I fought Demarcus Corley and fought through the pain. My hand is not 100% yet, but I was willing to do the same with Judah. He turned down a fight with an unknown British fighter with one working hand. Zab Judah can have "BROOKLYN" tattooed on his back, but by turning down a fight, he wasn't representing Brooklyn.
PC: If you knew Zab was reading this interview, what would you say to him right now?
AT: If Zab Judah does read this intervie, these words I have for him, "I ain't some British dude. I'm Ashley 'Treasure' Theophane and when you ready to man up, we can make this fight happen!"
PC: Good luck in pursuing the big fight that you want. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
AT: I want to thank For Goodness Shakes and Wellman & Honey Stinger for providing me products to help me push my body to the limit. HoodTwinz Mix Tape out soon. Team Theophane will hit 2009 real hard. Congratulations to Barack Obama. Thanks for the Interview Percy.
