CHRIS ARREOLA: "THEY'RE GOING TO GET A KNOCKOUT"By Percy Crawford | November 26, 2008
 |
| "I'm going to go in there and give the fans what they want to see. They want to see a knockout and they're going to get a knockout. I'm going to come in there to fight. Regardless of what happens, I'm coming to fight. I'm going to make Travis fight…I could end up on the other side knocked out, but I tell you one thing, if and when that happens, I'm going to make sure it was a great fight," stated heavyweight contender Chris Arreola as he talked about his clash this Saturday, November 29th, with Travis Walker. Check out what he had to say about Walker and the fight, plus his thoughts on James Toney, Tony Thompson, Wladimir Klitschko, Hasim Rahman and much more.
PC: How was you training camp for this fight with Travis Walker?
CA: I had a great training camp man. I had Travis Kaufmann and a lot of big guys for this camp. They were big and able. I didn't bring no punching bags in here. These guys are up here giving me hell every day.
PC: A lot of people have been talking about your weight lately. Is that a problem for you?
CA: No. Honestly, for this camp, that was the last thing on my mind; my weight. All that matters to me is that I'm coming in ready to go 12 rounds toe-to-toe if I have to. I'm ready to go 12 rounds and fight my fight. That's my main concern right now, but my weight, honestly, if you look at my body, it looks good. It looks like I'm in my 30's or 40's, you know? I haven't even checked my weight this whole camp. I'm not worried about it.
PC: A fan on the message boards want to know what is your amateur background and who have you sparred with coming up?
CA: I started boxing at the age of 7. Most of my amateur career was in the youths from like 8 years old until I was 16. I have about 130-140 amateur fights. In Southern California, there are a lot of fights every weekend. There are a lot of boxing gyms and different fighters around here. The most I've ever fought in 1 day was 4 times. Other than that, it was just a lot of different tournaments and stuff like that. I fought in the Junior Olympics, Silver Gloves and stuff like that. As far as sparring, I just kind of worked my way through the gyms. I sparred a lot of notable fighters. I sparred the guy that fought Casamayor. Personally I thought he beat Casamayor. Jose Armando Santa Cruz. I actually fought him when I was in the amateurs. I was that small. I was a tall, lanky kid. I saw him and was like, "Dude, do you remember me?" He was like, "Damn, what the hell happened to you?"
PC: What do you think of Travis Walker as a fighter?
CA: As a fighter, he's a good, strong fighter, but he's over here telling me that I haven't been tested and if you look at our records, you can see who has been tested. I've fought contenders and prospects and he's fought a bunch of bums. Personally, I think he's a good, strong fighter, but for him to question who I've fought is crazy. Let's look at each others resumes. The only noticeable fighters he has is TJ Wilson and Jason Estrada. He went all 10 rounds with Jason Estrada. His fight with George Garcia could have gone either way. Also, when he fought Jason Gavern, it could have went either way. I was there watching that fight. Gavern gave him hell and Jason Gavern is not a puncher nor is he a fighter like I am either. But that was years ago and Gavern was years ago. The only recent fight I've seen of his is TJ Wilson. Other than that, I think he's a strong fighter that is going to come ready to fight. I'm sure he will step up his talents for me.
PC: The combined record of your last 3 opponents, including Walker, is 70-2. How important is this progression for you in quality opponents to set yourself up for the major title run?
CA: I want to make sure everybody knows I'm not a hype job. I took care of all of my punching bags when I was supposed to. I took care of all of them punching bags back in my first 10-15 fights. It was time for me to step up my competition and when I did it, I did it right. I didn't fight no bums or anyone that had a losing record. When I fought the Cuban Olympian, that was a step up for me. He was a tough fighter and a lot of people didn't see that fight, but he was tough.
PC: This will be your 4th fight this year my man. Usually when a guy gets to 20-25 fights, like you have, that activity level drops off. Would you like to continue to be this active?
CA: Yeah, that's my goal. I want to be an active heavyweight. It's like Freddie Roach says, "You can't be an elite fighter fighting 4 times in 4 years." I want to fight 4 times in a year. That's just the way I feel.
PC: If you count the Witherspoon fight, then you've ended your last 13 fights by KO or TKO. Could we expect anything different in this fight?
CA: No! Like I've said before I'm going to go in there and give the fans what they want to see. They want to see a knockout and they're going to get a knockout. I'm going to come in there to fight. Regardless of what happens, I'm coming to fight. I'm going to make Travis fight. We're in the heavyweight division man; all it takes is 1 punch to be lights out so I gotta be on my P's and Q's because I could end up on the other side knocked out, but I tell you one thing, if and when that happens, I'm going to make sure it was a great fight. It won't be a one-punch knockout type of thing. That guy better make sure he packed his lunch packed because it's going to be a long night.
PC: James Toney will be fighting Tony Thompson next month and Klitschko just signed to fight Rahman. Is there any heavyweight in particular that you would like to fight if you're successful Saturday night?
CA: To be honest, it really doesn't matter to me. They make the fight and I come ready to do it. Of course I want the title bouts because I want the belts around my waist, but whatever my managers and promoters say is what will happen. I'm definitely looking to bigger and better things because this is a big fight for me and this is a big fight and that's the way I want to keep it. I want to give the fans out there what they want. Honestly, who wants to see Valuev against Holyfield? Who wants to see Klitschko against Rahman? No offense to Rahman, but he lost his last fight I thought personally. I would rather see Thompson against Toney.
PC: Walker is the most experienced guy you have faced. Would you say he is the toughest?
CA: To be honest with you, I have been having great sparring and getting my butt kicked in sparring and kicking some butt; it goes both ways. I think he is a tough opponent, but I've been having a tougher time against my sparring partners.
PC: I like both you and Paul Williams because you both have that old school fighter's mentality. You guys are sort of like tag team partners fighting on the same cards now. Is that something you enjoy?
CA: Yeah man. It's really cool. We've been doing it for a while so if it ain't broke, why fix it, you know? If we're going to fight, we might as well fight together. And you know what? Honestly dude, I feel like a lot of PPV fights live up to the hype sometimes, but a lot of boxing fans are turned away from boxing because it's only one major fight on a PPV card. Why can't we have 2? They give us 3 rinky dinky fights and 1 prize fight.
PC: Basically you're paying $50 for one fight.
CA: Exactly. I think we need to bring the old school 4 fight cards back the way it used to be.
PC: I saw an interview where Joe "Daddy" Stevenson gave you a shout out. How tight are you with him?
CA: That's my boy man. He's a real cool cat. I love that guy. That guy came down here to spar with Jose Lopez to get his hands straight. That guy is a cool guy man. That's a really, really cool guy.
PC: Are you a fan of MMA?
CA: Yeah, I am; of course I watch it. The only problem I have with MMA is this man, Brock Lesnar, is a champion. He got a title shot with 2 wins and 1 loss. That's a slap in the face to all of the other MMA fighters that's been working their ass off with all of these wins and this guy just comes in there with 2 fights and gets a title shot. That's a slap in the face.
PC: I agree! Chris I won't hold you much longer my man. Good luck Saturday night and we'll speak after the fight. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
CA: Tell everybody to watch the fight man because, like I said before and I'll say it again, this is going to be an exciting fight and if you don't watch, you guys are going to miss some fireworks man.
