| Back Alley Promotions staged their second professional mixed martial arts show under their Xtreme Knockout series to a sellout crowd of 600 rabid fight fans at the PCW Arena in Arlington, TX, Saturday night. In the main event, Liam McCarty from Arlington, TX, gave his hometown fans reason to celebrate, submitting veteran cage fighter Brandon McDowell of Redondo Beach, CA in the first round.
McCarty started out tentative as he looked to land some low kicks. McDowell was undeterred and took McCarty down to the mat with a judo throw. McCarty managed to get back to his feet, and returned the favor to McDowell, slamming him hard to the mat. On the ground, McCarty was able to pass the guard of his opponent but McDowell's veteran savvy and excellent ground defense nullified any potential attack from McCarty. Both fighters got back to their feet only to have McDowell take the action back to the mat. The move would prove fortuitous for McCarty who was able to lock in an arm bar that forced McDowell to tap.
The official time of the submission was 3:24 in the first round. With the win, McCarty improves his record to 10-5; McDowell falls to 27-25 in defeat.
In the evening's co-main event, local favorite Douglas Frey, Arlington, TX, bludgeoned Mike Rodriguez in earning a first round TKO. Frey came out looking to land a leg kick but Rodriguez took him to the ground. Frey was able to get dominate position and rained down some painful elbows to the head. After absorbing some punishing shots, Rodriguez gave up his back and Frey was all to eager to capitalize and initiated a barrage of punches that left the referee with no other option but to waive a halt to the fight.
The official time of the stoppage was 1:44 in the first round. With the win Frey remains undefeated and improves his record to 3-0; Rodriguez falls to 1-1 in defeat.
Derek Campos, Dallas, looked impressive in submitting Brandon Crick, Spokane, WA, in two rounds. Things started briskly as Campos landed a hard left hook to start the round. Crick looked to counter and both fighters took turns landing hard low kicks. Campos upped the ante, landing some hard kicks to the exposed midsection of Crick. Crick sought retaliation, throwing some hard kicks at Campos, but the Dallas bases fighter was able to counter the attack and took Crick to the ground. As Crick tried to get to his feet he was blasted by a hard right hand from Campos that put him right back on the mat. Campos tried to end things with some hard ground and pound but Crick was able to weather the onslaught to end the round.
Crick's reprieve would be short lives as Campos started the second round by landing a hard right hand that wobbled Crick. Smelling blood, Campos pounced on his wounded adversary and after landing a barrage of punches, slipped in the hooks for a rear naked choke that ended the fight.
The official time of the submission was 0:35 into round two. With the win Campos begins his professional career with a record of 1-0; Crick falls to 0-1 in defeat.
Chris White, Dallas, battered and bruised a game but outclassed Moises Diaz, Arlington, TX, over three brutal rounds. White came out firing at the opening round, missing with a short left hook. Diaz tried for a takedown but White ended up taking his back and landing some hard strikes. Attempting to end the night early, White tried to slip in a guillotine choke but couldn't get the proper leverage. Undaunted, White resorted to some concussive ground and pound, blooding Diaz' face, to close out the round.
The second round was controlled by White, who came out at the bell, landing some hard leg kicks. Diaz gamely tried to counter the attack but White scored a takedown and went in for an arm bar. Diaz was able to break the hold and took side control of White but was unable to do any real damage to his adversary.
In the third and final round, both fighters started out strongly, trading hard punches back and fourth as the crowd roared. Trying to land a submission, White took Diaz to the mat but opted instead to rain down a barrage of hard punches to end out the round.
All three judges scored the fight unanimously for White. With the win, White improves his record to 2-0; Diaz drops his pro debut and begins his professional career with a record of 0-1.
In what was the fight of the night, Jimmy Guzman, Houston, and Nick Blanton, Arlington, TX, waged a brutal three round affair that had the capacity crowd on their feet cheering throughout.
Things started out spirited as Blanton came out firing a salvo on strikes punctuated by a hard straight kick. Guzman shot in scored a hard take down of his adversary. Both fighters put on an exhilarating display of grappling acumen as they effortlessly exchanged dominant positions though neither gained an advantage. Blanton broke the stalemate when he slipped into a top mount and tried to catch Guzman in a guillotine choke. Guzman managed to break from the hold and landed some hard body shots in a side mount position. As Blanton sought reprieve, Guzman took control of his opponent's back and tried to slip in a rear naked choke but was unable to clamp down before the end of the round.
The second round proved to be a replica of the first as Guzman came out and landed a huge left hook that buckled the knees of Blanton. Blanton tried to retaliate with a high kick but Guzman deftly countered and slammed his foe hard against the mat. On the ground, Guzman was able to pass the guard of Blanton and rained down a torrent of hard elbow and punches. Sensing his opponent was weakened, Guzman tried for an arm bar but Blanton defended it well and was able to escape the round.
The pace slowed considerably in the third and final round as both fighters were clearly fatigued from the energy exerted in the previous rounds. Fighting through the fatigue, Guzman took Blanton to the ground and tried to take his back and a rear naked choke. Blanton was able to avoid the submission but was unable to do much else. Guzman mustered up the energy to take a side mount and inflicted some damage with a brief barrage of shots. Blanton weathered the attack to survive the round.
All three judges scored the fight in favor of Guzman. With the win, Guzman begins his professional MMA career with a record of 1-0; Blanton drops to 1-1 in defeat.
Christopher Jones, Longview, scored an impressive first round stoppage over Nick Bailey of Greenville. Bailey came out firing at the bell, winging some hard right hands that barely missed their intended mark. Jones weathered the attack and took Bailey to the ground hard. Bailey remained calm and tried to sink in a guillotine choke, but Jones managed to break free of the hold. Jones manages then to pass the guard of Bailey and rains down a flurry of concussive punches that gave the referee no other option but to waive a halt to the fight.
The official time of the stoppage was 1:46 in the first round.
With the win Jones improves his record to 2-1; Bailey falls to 0-2.
Seth Clifton, Dallas, needed only 11 seconds to stop Danny Payne of Mesquite. At the opening bell, Clifton came out and connect with a whip of a right high kick that wobbled Payne. Seizing the opportunity, Clifton pounced on the wounded Payne and after a flurry on unanswered shots; the referee stepped in and waived a halt to the bout.
With the win Clifton improves his record to 3-0; Payne falls to 13-11-1.
