World-class trainer Freddie Roach has just informed us that he will be working with former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito upon his return from suspension. Both Margarito and his former trainer, Javier Capetillo, had their licenses revoked and were banned for at least one year last month for tampering with Margarito's hand wraps before his January 24 bout with Shane Mosley. "I'll be representing him as his sole trainer," Roach informed us.
Apparently, Margarito and his team approached Roach and earnestly explained that he was unaware of what his former trainer was doing as his hands were being wrapped. They then asked the world-class trainer if he would be willing to work with Margarito. Roach, believing his plea of ignorance, agreed and will now represent Margarito as his trainer when the former champion appears before the California State Athletic Commission in six months to appeal his suspension. "With my reputation, maybe they'll be lenient," Roach added.
