
Former three-division champion Alexis Arguello has been found dead at his home. Presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed the news earlier today. Specific details of his untimely passing are still unknown, but he was found at his home with a gunshot wound to the chest. Coroners are conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Just last year, Arguello was elected mayor of Managua. Amidst reports of financial mishandling of public money, the shooting is rumored to be a suicide. He was only 57 years old.
Inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992, Arguello finished his career with an outstanding 82 wins, 65 coming by way of knockout, and only 8 losses. After capturing the WBC lightweight title in 1981, he became the sixth man in boxing history to win a title in three different weight divisions. Having faced 14 world champions in his career, he will always be remembered for his two classic wars with jr. welterweight champion Aaron Pryor.
