FightHype.com caught up with EliteXC fighter KJ Noons to talk about his big win over Edson Berto on the ShoXC card, his future plans and more. Check out what he had to say about his broken hand, which he doesn't plan to have surgery on, as well as his plans to avenge his first loss to Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett.

PC: Congrats on your win over Edson Berto.

KN: Ah, thanks a lot.

PC: How do you feel you performed?

KN: I feel good. I feel like I had a great performance and I don't think a lot of people know, but I broke my hand and it's completely broken.

PC: Which hand was it?

KN: My left one. I broke it in the first round.

PC: Do you have surgery scheduled and how long will you be out for?

KN: I'm not going to get surgery. 6-8 weeks out because of the broken hand. I'm not going to get surgery just because I broke my hand a year ago in the same place. Surgery sometimes makes it worse actually, so I'm just going to let it heal naturally.

PC: In the first round, he got top position and immediately when you opened your guard, he went for his patented heel hook. You were real prepared for it. How much had you worked on that?

KN: I've just been working on my whole Jiu Jitsu game and I knew that's his signature move, so I just watched and made sure I didn't get caught with something stupid.

PC: After the first round, Berto seemed exhausted and you started to have a little fun. Could you sense he was tiring?

KN: Yeah, he was definitely gassing because if you watch the tape, from the first bell to the end of the fight, it was consistent at a very fast pace for an MMA action-packed fight. If you watch, he shot a lot of times and that takes a lot of energy out of a person to shoot; not a lot of people can continuously shoot. A mixture of him shooting and us fighting takes a toll on you.

PC: How important was that win for you to bounce back from the Bennett fight and not start your Elite XC career 0-2?

KN: It's huge. You never want to put too much pressure on yourself, but every fight is a lot of pressure. That first loss, I didn't think anyone had a chance to see how I fight and if I can fight, so this solidified that I can fight and also that I'm a crowd pleaser. People like to watch me fight.

PC: You surprised me even with the knee. Did you see that opening up as his shoots started to get a little lazy?

KN: Yeah, I practice that a lot when people shoot in. You don't even have to throw it hard. Just pick it up and there's so much momentum coming forward that most of the time, they'll knock themselves out. I was looking for it, but I didn't want to do it in the first round because if you miss, they're going to get you on your back and I didn't want to go to the ground. I wanted to wait until he broke down a little bit and wait until he got tired. I could see that it wasn't as fast as the first round. I just had to time it right.

PC: Do you take fights the way they come to you or do you try and get an MMA fight and then a boxing match next?

KN: I don't really know, you know? It's really up to Gary because he's the promoter. I guess whatever his schedule is, he just let's me know. I fought a boxing match before this Berto fight. He just gives me 6 weeks and its like, "Hey get ready boxing, or get ready MMA." He gives me enough time to get ready, plus I'm constantly in the gym anyway just to work out. I like to stay in shape.

PC: Do you think boxing and MMA are so different that it shouldn't be a debate?

KN: It shouldn't be a debate. It's two different sports and its weird because they're the same, but they're different. It's different sports and they're helping each other out. As you can see, boxing is on all the time now.  I think the whole MMA thing is just fighting in general. I think MMA is making boxing come back, to tell you the truth. It's some great fights going on in boxing now because they have to step it up to compete.

PC: You have the best of both worlds being a boxer and mixed martial artist, but did you think MMA would grow like it has?

KN: No. In the beginning, I don't think anybody expected it to, but you know, it just grew and it's a great sport. People just love it. It's here now and people can fight and make a living doing it.

PC: Going into the Bennett fight, you were the favorite to win, but in the Berto fight, you were a slight underdog. Which role are you more comfortable with?

KN: I actually like being the underdog. If you're the underdog, it's not too much expectation and then you could surprise people. I like being the underdog.

PC: In the first round of the Berto fight, did you know that your hand was broken immediately after you did it?

KN: I automatically knew I broke it. I can see, watching the tape, that I would grit when I threw it after that. I could feel it. It was definitely broke in the first round, but the adrenaline carried me threw. He could've broken my ankle and my arm, and I still wouldn't have given up. I had to come back from that loss.

PC: After your hand is heeled, is the Bennett rematch what you want next?

KN: Whatever Gary or Showtime and Elite want me to do next. I know I'm going to get that rematch some day and it's not really a priority right now. Whoever I fight, it's going to be exciting, but I'll definitely get the rematch.

PC: I think the ShoXC idea is a good way to promote the young talent in MMA. What do you think of the idea to showcase young talent threw Showtime?

KN: It's a great opportunity and its more exposure for MMA and upcoming fighters. I think it's great because a lot of times, guys don't get that TV time on the big shows because all of those guys have names on the big shows. It definitely gives up-and-coming fighters a great opportunity to showcase their talents.

PC: We saw a little more showboating from you in this fight. Was that because you saw how tired he was and was just having fun?

KN: I wanted to have fun. I just wanted to break him down even more mentally. I was ready to fight and you could tell he didn't want to be in there. He was done and it was just to solidify it and show he really didn't want to be in there.

PC: KJ, it's always a pleasure to speak with you. Is there anything you want to say in closing?

KN: I just want to thank my sponsors: City Boxing, Terra Financing, Rockstar and all my family and friends, thank you for the support. Everyone look out for me when I heel this hand and fight next.
