"I'm working on the Berto and Mosley fight. We're hoping to make it. We're not that far off. We're not done yet. There are a lot of complicated issues, like Berto is probably going to have to give up his belt," stated renowned promoter Lou DiBella as he spoke to FightHype.com about the current status of the proposed January 30th clash between WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and WBA champion Shane Mosley. Although he's optimistic that the fight will be made, DiBella revealed that there were still some issues that needed to be worked out.
"There are issues with the WBC and Mosley not wanting to fight for the BC championship, there are issues with Shane only wanting to fight in certain locations, but all of that stuff, I think, can be overcome," he continued, "we're not that far away so I'm still optimistic that a deal can get made."
With both fighters being champions, many fans assumed that the matchup would be a unification bout. However, for one reason or another, Mosley isn't too interested in the WBC title, the same title he captured nine years ago when he defeated Oscar De La Hoya via split decision. It seems odd that Mosley wouldn't want to grab the title again. Maybe he doesn't want to pay the sanctioning fee. Maybe he's holding out for one of those new WBC Diamond Championship belts. Regardless, it would be nice to make this fight a unification, just to officially clean up the welterweight division.
