ROY NELSON: "I WON IT ALL, SO I GUESS I WAS THE MOST SKILLED"By Percy Crawford | January 27, 2010
 |
| "My goal when I went there was to win the show, whether I had fought Kimbo or not…I won it all, so I guess I was the most skilled… If it's Struve, sure, I think that will be a good fight, but at this point, I honestly don't know who my next opponent will be," stated UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson as he talked about his future plans after winning Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter. Check it out!
PC: How is everything going Roy?
RN: Everything is going great man.
PC: Congratulations on becoming the Ultimate Fighter winner for season 10. Your boxing looked good in that fight, although you are a fighter known for your ground game. Is that something that you have been working on?
RN: Yeah man. I work on everything to become a complete fighter. I definitely worked a lot on my standup.
PC: One of the things from the show that stuck out in my head was the fact that you basically trained yourself. Has that changed any?
RN: No, I still pretty much do the same thing and train with the same guys. The important thing was to just get out of the garage and I did that.
PC: Did you want to make a statement and win the show so you wouldn't be just known as the guy that beat Kimbo Slice?
RN: Um yeah, but my goal when I went there was to win the show, whether I had fought Kimbo or not.
PC: Did you think going into the show that you were the most skilled guy in the house?
RN: I won it all, so I guess I was the most skilled.
PC: Hey, the Jets beat the Chargers and people didn't feel they were the more skilled; just a better gameplan.
RN: Yeah, you're right, but I guess I can say I knew my experience would be a major factor in the fights.
PC: And you had a ton of experience going into the show, mostly in the IFL, which took place in a ring. Now that you are in the UFC, is it a major adjustment for you to convert over to the cage?
RN: Actually I like the cage better, so no, I don't think it will be much of an adjustment at all.
PC: I'm hearing Stephan Struve as your next opponent. Is that a fight that you like?
RN: If it's Struve, sure, I think that will be a good fight, but at this point, I honestly don't know who my next opponent will be.
PC: Brendan Schaub was one of the more talented guys in the house and you took him out with a highlight reel knockout. How did you approach that fight?
RN: Man, really like I approach every fight; just work on everything and come in expecting everything. I knew he was strong and well-rounded so I had to make my game rounded as well. So I worked on everything and approached this fight like I approach all of my fights.
PC: At this point, do you not care that people talk about your appearance?
RN: No, it doesn't bother me.
PC: Frank Mir said you have skills, but he would like to see you fight at light heavyweight. Any chance of us seeing "Big Country" at 205?
RN: Frank walks around lighter than me, so if he moves down to 205, I will think about it (laughing). Nah, you won't see me at light heavyweight.
PC: What was the experience of being in the house like for you?
RN: It was different, you know, you take a lot of things for granted and it was a very different experience. I have trained on my own my entire career, so it took some getting used to. I wasn't used to training with coaches and things like that.
PC: I can't wait to see you fight again. You made me look like a genius because I had to tell people not to look at your physique because you can fight (laughing). So thanks for that. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
RN: (Laughing) Thank you man. I just want to thank all of my sponsors for supporting me and sticking by me.
