As crazy it sounds, I guess we should be thankful for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight falling apart. With only three months to promote and prepare for the fight, did you really think there would have been enough time to hype the contest, film a 24/7, travel the country and still have enough time for the fighters to train properly? Balderdash! The con was on from the start.
Though they aren't fighting each other, Pacquiao will have an entertaining sacrifice in Joshua Clottey and Mayweather finally gave up locking up a fight with Matthew Hatton and will face Shane Mosley instead. Logic would dictate that both fighters should meet up, either with a win or a loss, down the road and boxing's biggest fight ever would be promoted the way it should, with a full head of steam.
Though this is deviating from the script, I guarantee you that when Pacquiao beats Clottey and if Mayweather beats Mosley, these two are still miles from seeing each other in the ring.
Should "The Master of Plaster" Antonio Margarito get reinstated and win his fight on the Pacquiao-Clottey undercard, expect these two to meet in June or July after Pacquiao participates in the general elections in the Philippines. Groan if you like, but Bob Arum sure as hell isn't going to deal with Golden Boy until he cashes out on Margarito.
The whole idea is that Arum is trying to gain more leverage in negotiations by citing that Pacquiao has beaten two fighters that Mayweather was scared to face in Cotto and Margarito, but the real reason is that it's just another excuse for Arum to distribute a Top Rank pay-per-view and rake in the cash.
What about Mayweather? Should he get past Mosley, he will have beaten a fighter that Pacquiao doesn't want any business with and would gain a world title, citing that he is the best, as per his usual, and logjam purse negotiations. Richard Schafer said that Mayweather is gunning for the top welterweights in the world from here on out, but the last time we heard him say that, there were rumors of guys like 19-year-old Saul Alverez.
I'm beginning to think that this fight may have a better chance of happening if both guys lose, because if that's the case, then Mayweather and Pacquiao can only rely on each other for that big payday.
