Back In November, Alfonso Gomez (21-4) won a 6-round technical decision over Jesus Soto Karass, capturing the WBC Welterweight Americas title in the process. Gomez will now put his title on the line against boxing legend Jose Luis Castillo (60-9) on the undercard of Pacquiao-Clottey March 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington,Texas.
By far one of the toughest tasks of his boxing career, the former Contender star has been training for weeks in his Oxnard, California gym. Improving his skills daily with his father and trainer, Alfonso Sr., the known gym rat has been receiving good sparring from many fighters, including NABF Lightweight Champion " Bam Bam" Brandon Rios.
Winning his last 3 bouts, Gomez has become a much better fighter since that devastating loss back in 2008 to Miguel Cotto. A win over Castillo will edge him closer to another world title shot. Showing tremendous promise in his boxing career, his solid work ethic has continued to pay off. His continued preparations in the gym and remaining ready is the key for the difficult challenge that lies ahead in the veteran Castillo.
Castillo is a fighter that is primarily known for his punching power; a scrapper with a long history of knocking out opponents. Also coming in with more ring experience, Castillo has fought some of boxing's biggest names, such as Ricky Hatton, Diego Corrales and Floyd Mayweather Jr. twice.
These two Mexican fighters will look to make a major impact on one of the years most entertaining fight cards. Gomez hopes to walk out victorious, adding another big name to his win column. A victory for him would be the greatest feeling in his career, next to beating the late Aturo Gatti.
