BOB ARUM: "650,000...THAT IS THE WORST IT WOULD DO"By Andre Zurbrug | March 18, 2010

| "All we have is the satellite numbers and they are very strong," stated promoter Bob Arum as he discussed the pay-per-view numbers from Manny Pacquiao's welterweight title defense against Joshua Clottey this past weekend at Cowboys Stadium. According to Arum, the preliminary numbers from the satellite companies are encouraging, but because they have yet to receive all the reports from the numerous cable systems, he's hesitant to make any predictions on what the final numbers may be.
"We're not giving out any numbers yet because we have very little [information] from the cable systems, which you need. The cable numbers are very fragmented, so it could be a few days," Arum would tell ESPN's Dan Rafael. "But the number that you can't go any lower than is 650,000 for the fight. That is the worst it would do, but it should be a lot higher."
For most pay-per-view events, even 650,000 is an extremely good number. Some events are lucky if they can even generate half of those numbers. That being said, if the plan is to face the winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley, they better hope it does a lot more than that if they don't want to run into any new roadblocks, like the purse split, at the negotiating table.
