Golden Boy Promotions, along with Mayweather Promotions, hosted a conference call today featuring Roger Mayweather and Naazim Richardson, the trainers for Floyd "Money" Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) and "Sugar" Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs). When David Mayo of the Grand Rapids Press asked Richardson how he planned to cut off the ring to limit Mayweather's movement, something that so many past opponents have failed to do, Brother Naazim didn't seem to be worried about it. "The game plan I have is that I'm bringing 'Sugar' Shane Mosley to the table. I'm not bringing them other 40 guys that he fought. I'm bringing 'Sugar' Shane Mosley; I'm bringing another decorated living legend to the table," he commented.
In fact, Richardson believes that it's Floyd Mayweather who will have to answer to what Mosley will do. "Some of the questions are gonna have to be asked of Floyd Mayweather and what he's gonna have to do to deal with 'Sugar' Shane Mosley," he added. "Nobody said we're gonna come in and fall into the same old cookie-cutter ideology that these other athletes have approached, that they're taking, when dealing with Floyd Mayweather. We're bringing 'Sugar' Shane to the table."
Obviously refusing to reveal their gameplan, Richardson played down the talk of any specific tactics. "You cut off the ring, if that's your purpose, to engage in that matter; you cut off the ring. If you don't choose to cut off the ring, you don't have to cut off the ring. You can't document too many fights where Muhammad Ali had to cut off the ring," he continued. "So cutting off the ring is a procedure you take when you're trying to apply a certain tactic. We may not be applying that tactic, so cutting off the ring may not fall under the umbrella of what we need to do."
