FightHype.com was on hand earlier today as Floyd Mayweather Jr. held an open workout for the media just weeks before his highly-anticipated showdown with WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley. Always in a talkative mood, Mayweather had a lot to say, particularly about the media, who he feels focuses too much on the negative as opposed to the positive. "I was sitting back, actually, I was in the nail shop getting my manicure and my pedicure, you know, my weekly thing, and I seen entertainment tonight or something, but all the news that you see is negative," he commented. "This country is already at war. The main thing about our country is we need to get more positive than negative." Of course, it didn't take long for Mayweather to change the topic to himself.
"I don't worry about nothin'. Like I said before, my main focus always is who I'm facing. A lot of times, you got people that the media creates. Me, it's hard work and dedication; just beating guys day in and day out. You don't get to this point by fighting nobody," the undefeated multi-division champion added, making it clear that the success he's had thus far in his career is no fluke. "They say Floyd is duckin' and dodging'; you don't get ranked pound-for-pound or known as the greatest fighther to ever live by facing nobody! It's just I make them look like nobody. I make A fighters look like B fighters. It's not my fault I'm just that good. There's a difference from being talented and gifted. I'm God gifted!"
It's clear that Mayweather was in rare form as he worked out for the media in attendance. Love him or hate him, Mayweather never fails to garner attention through the words that he speaks. On May 1, we'll find out if he can garner more attention with his performance, as Mosley will likely be his toughest challenge thus far.
Check out more quotes from the workout:
On the lawsuit that Manny Pacquiao filed
"I don't even know about no lawsuit. I don't even know what you talking about. I get lawsuits from people all the time. I'm famous. It happens. Next!"
On Shane Mosley
"Mosley has problems with boxers. Me, myself, like I said, I'm the best boxer to ever put on a pair of gloves, so we know what it is. You just go back and look at Mosley, when he faced, um
.. Winky Wright. Winky Wright beat him with just one hand; with just the jab. So, you know, you fighting a guy that's sharp as a razor and got two hands."
On his Filipino fans
"I want Filipinos to tune in and watch Mayweather-Mosley. That's the fight, you know. Mayweather is the face of boxing! No losses, no 3 losses, no 2 draws, nothing! The face of boxing!"
On Shane Mosley's comment on 24/7 about writing Floyd's checks
"I told Shane I know about that nose job he got. He borrowed 2 million from Golden Boy. If Mosley is writing me a check, why would Mosley write me a 40 million dollar check and write himself a 6 million dollar check? That doesn't make sense. Why would you pay somebody else more than you pay yourself? So you writing a check and paying me more? Come on!"
