MAYWEATHER SR.: "IT'S MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY AND IT AIN'T NO OTHER WAY!"

By Percy Crawford | August 29, 2007
MAYWEATHER SR.:

"The training that I do is beyond him," stated world-renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he gives us the scoop on why he'll no longer be working with WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. Sr. made it clear that "he didn't just do himself a favor, but he did me a favor" as he explains why he wasn't interested in working with a fighter that he didn't have any communication with. You don't want to miss this explosive interview as he talks in depth about Dawson, his thoughts on Mayweather Jr. participating in Dancing With The Stars while he prepares for his clash with Ricky Hatton and much more, including news that Anthony Hanshaw will be returning to Biloxi again on November 3rd to take another former light heavyweight champion...Glen Johnson. Check it out!

PC: How is everything going man?

FM: Everything is going great with me.

PC: The big news of the day is Chad Dawson switching from you as his trainer to Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. Can you tell us about that?

FM: I don't really know too much about it. I don't know what's happening with the guy. All I know is, basically, the training that I do is beyond him and I think when I asked him not to bring his lady down and his kids down, I think he had a problem with that. He has a problem with not leaving the people where they're supposed to be. He wants to bring the people down. The last time his wife was down there for the whole camp, I didn't even know it. Her and the baby nowÂ…the whole camp and I didn't know it. I guess he don't want to hear that, me telling him about his family and stuff, but hey, it's my way or the highway and it ain't no other way. I'm not concerned about him man because I make champions anyway. Just like I made him one, I'll make another one. He won a title with me and he made a title defense with me and now all of a sudden, he's telling somebody he ain't feeling me. Motherfucker, you felt me when you got the title. You have the title and you think you got it now? He is going to find out though. I tell you one thing, I guarantee you he just tore his ass and the world know it. Over some bullshit; something stupid. I was just telling him your familyÂ…look hear, I understand about your family man. Your family is family, but there's a place and time for that. They had no business even being up there when he won. Me, myself, personally I think he got big-headed too quick. He thinks he got it all now. He about to find out and he might find out a little sooner than he thinks. I tell you this, you've watched him perform and his last fight was with me. His last two was with me. If he gets past this next guy, watch his next two performances and then ask me about it. Then we will have something to talk about. He might perform good this time.

PC: You saying he may look good this time because you've shown him enough?

FM: He thinks I've showed him enough. I gave him all he needed to have. I didn't give him all I have. I won't ever give nobody all I got. I gave him enough to get what he needs to get. I'm the champ at what I do. I made him a champion, but he can't take my title. I can continue to do what I do. The same thing I did with him, I can do with a bunch more. I'm not worrying about losing my title because there ain't nobody that can outtrain me. That's my least worry is to lose my title. And people who have a problem with what I'm talking about, let's get all the media together to pick the best trainers and let them match up against me and you'll see. It would be so plain to see, Ray Charles could see it. When Chad left, he didn't hurt nobody but Chad. He didn't hurt me. Let's see how far he goes now and then we'll talk about it. He might look good in his next fight, but we'll see five fights down the road. He looked good the first fight, didn't he?

PC: Definitely!

FM: He looked good in the second fight, didn't he?

PC: No doubt!

FM: He might look good in his next fight, and I say might. If he don't look good in his next fight, it's all going downhill. Watch what I tell you. He has a problem with somebody telling him the facts and the truth, that's what it's all about. Somebody has trained you to win the title, then got you a defense, now all of a sudden, "we aint this way or that way." Man, what the hell are you talking about? That's the stupidest shit I've ever heard. He was with me and got the title. He was with me and got the title defense. Now he thinks he has it all. I'm here to tell him and the world right now that he aint no Floyd Mayweather Jr. by far; not even close. If that's what he thinks, he's in for a rude awakening. He thinks he's on top of the world. Basically that's what's going down with him and I know what the deal is with it. I told him before. I told him last time. Last time he didn't have no tennis shoes and he said he had to go to the airport to pick up somebody. I already knew what time that was. This is what's going down man.

PC: What are your thoughts on Lil' Floyd doing the Dancing with the Stars taping while training for Hatton?

FM: I thought that was going to be next year? He's fighting Hatton in December.

PC: I think he will be taping during preparations for Hatton and it may not air until next year.

FM: Honestly man, from what I've seen of Ricky Hatton. People saying because he knocked out Castillo and Lil' Floyd didn'tÂ…Lil' Floyd beat Castillo in two fights. Lil' Floyd hasn't done nothing but enhance his game since he's been fighting. Lil' Floyd enhanced his game off of his own ability. It doesn't have nothing to do with no training. He's in a spot now where he makes his own thing happen. It's not about nobody training him. Ricky Hatton aint nobody. You could whoop Ricky Hatton, shit. Ricky Hatton is another Gatti, but Gatti is just a little better. Gatti's just better, that's all. Same shit.

PC: Will you be training Steve Forbes for his next fight against Bojado?

FM: No. You know, I trained both of those guys before, Forbes and Panchito Bojado. I was supposed to train Steve Forbes, but I changed my mind. See, when these guys get into their thing, they're not going to play no games with me. See, with Steve Forbes, he did beat Demetrius Hopkins. He did for real. I trained Forbes for that fight and Steve beat him for real. The thing is, Steve Forbes wants to stay there with his family. See, they keep getting hung up in that family shit. He wants to come down and have me train him for two weeks. Man, I don't work that way if I can't train you for the whole routeÂ…man, look here, I told his manager, "Let whoever started, finish with him." If Bojado's in shape, Bojado's going to beat his ass. I don't want to be in it. How did you get the news about Chad? Off of the internet?

PC: Yeah, it was posted on the internet.

FM: Like I said man, I was just telling him about his woman and his kids coming down here man. That don't mix with boxing. He wants to have his kids down here and train too. He wants his cake and eat it too and boxing don't go that way. You can't have a love fest and boxing fest going at the same time. It don't work that way. It's his choice. He made the choice. You still have your recorder going?

PC: Yeah, we're still rolling Big Floyd.

FM: I want to tell you that Mustafa was a gentleman about everything. Eddie Mustafa was a gentleman about everything. It's been likewise with him. He had a fighter approach me and I approached Mustafa and told him that his fighter came to me and wanted me to train him and blah, blah, this and that. Mustafa said, "Hey man, you know we ain't going to fall out about no stuff like that." I said the same thing to Mustafa, "He's yours. Don't worry about it." The whole thing is, instead of him telling the truth, he's going to make it like we don't see eye to eye. We saw eye to eye when you won your title. We saw eye to eye when you defended your title. Now, all of a sudden, we don't see eye to eye.  I don't know if he was that guy anyway man. I seen him down there a couple of times and when people start asking you, "Man, you think I should spar man. I've been sparring a lot of times." Sometimes man, you question that. You don't want t a fighter asking you that stuff. There's some guys he'd box and he'd ask, "You think I should box him?" Hell yeah you box him. I wish him the best, but I'm going to tell you this right, I got him off to a good start and I hope you could hold on to what you got. One thing about it is, he needs me as bad as I need him. He's a forgotten product already. He hasn't even gone anywhere yet. It's on him what he wants to do. Like I say, Floyd Joy doesn't have to kiss up to none of these fighters because I get calls every day, all day, 24 hours a day and 24/7. I will tell this to him and any other fighter, "It's my way or the highway and it ain't no other way." That right there is the full story. If he thinks Floyd done lost something because Floyd lost himÂ…no, no, no! I don't kiss no fighter's rear end because all of them come and go. They here today and gone tomorrow. You don't think I knew that about him? I knew that a long time ago. I told his manager that me and him didn't have a relationship really and that I really didn't care to work with him. I told his manager that and you could put that right in the interview because that's what I told his manager before this. We don't have no kind of communication. I don't deal with fighters that don't communicate with me. He didn't just do himself a favor, but he did me a favor.

PC: So, you were only dealing with each other during fight time?

FM: Exactly! His manager can verify what I just told you. I have some type of relationship with my fighters man. I correspond with them. This guy here, he acts like something is wrong with him. I don't know if he's all there. I don't know if all of his marbles are even there. He did a few other things I didn't understand. That's the best information I could give you Percy. He might try and lie about why he did it, but I know why he did it. He wanted people there that shouldn't have been there and boxing don't go that way. He knows I don't like that. I'm not with that and had I known he was going to do it againÂ…he knew once I found out that I was going to say "see you" anyway. Everybody knows how I am man. I'm a no nonsense trainer man. He knew that. I told him that before. I didn't want his kids and stuff down here and he said he wasn't doing that no more. I guess he ain't running the picture like he says he is. I guess he ain't being the full man. Somebody else is wearing the pants. He says what he's going to do and it's going to be one way and it ain't that way. That's pretty much it Percy.

PC: Well I thank you for giving it to me 100% uncut as always.

FM: Oh, you know I'm going to give it to you straight. I'm going to be back down your way to in November.

PC: Oh really? What you got going on?

FM: My man that just fought Roy, Tony Hanshaw, is fighting Glen Johnson on November 3rd I believe in Biloxi. You know, the guy that knocked out Roy Jones.

PC: Yeah, I definitely know who Johnson is.

FM: Yeah, I'm going to give you a much better show with Tony this time. I will have more time with him. I know exactly what I have to do for Johnson.

PC: I'm sure you do Big Floyd. We'll hook up. Just give me a buzz.

FM: I will definitely holla at you. Take care my man!
