"Team alexander has accepted an offer from Don King for a single unification bout versus Tim Bradley on January 29, 2011. Team alexander is now waiting for a bout agreement," stated Kevin Cunningham, trainer and manager of WBC & IBF jr. welterweight champion Devon Alexander, as he informed FightHype.com that all systems are go for a January 29 unification bout with WBO jr. welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. Despite an agreement by promoters Don King and Gary Shaw to split the purse 50/50 between both fighters, the highly-anticipated bout appeared to be in jeopardy last month when both sides expressed concern over the offer they were presented.
Specifically, Cunningham was not happy with the original offer, which sources say was less than the $1.1 million that WBA jr. middleweight champion Amir Khan was paid to defend his title against Paulie Malignaggi earlier this year. Naturally, Cunningham rightfully believes that a unification bout, where three titles are on the line between two undefeated fighters, is a much bigger and more meaningful fight than Khan's title defense, therefore, he was adamant about holding out for HBO and both promoters to "come correct" with a better offer. Whether or not they did actually "come correct" is a mystery, but it appears that Cunningham is now pleased with the numbers and Team Alexander is ready to sign on the dotted line. The bout is tentatively scheduled to take place on January 29 in New Orleans.
