What was once a great idea has now turned into a giant disaster in the case of Showtime's Super Six tournament. Carl Froch already pulled out of his semi-final matchup against Arthur Abraham, citing injury on top of the rest of his bitchassness. Not to mention, Andre Ward is trying to fight other opponents besides Andre Dirrell. Though Showtime is pressing for legal action against the participants should they pull out, it doesn't look like anybody is in any hurry to fight, which has pretty much sealed the deal on what initially started out as a great endeavor.
The only positive side of this is that we might get to see any of the fighters in the mix against IBF champion Lucian Bute. Some may even make a jump to 175 and challenge the top guys there, but it pretty much sums up what the general public has come to realize about the sport that the best don't care about fighting the best. It's unfortunate too because this next round in the tournament was shaping up to be the best yet. Froch-Abraham would've been a fight of the year candidate for sure, and Ward-Dirrell would have crowned the true superstar of the division.
If the failure of Pacquiao-Mayweather to launch on multiple occasions, or Paul Williams still trying to find a way out of a rematch with Sergio Martinez, wasn't enough to aggravate you, the forthcoming cancellation will surely be. Ward and Dirrell should shoulder most of the blame though because before the tournament, nobody cared about them, so they owe it to the public to move forward with their commitment.
Bite or Bark: Top Rank Edition
It seems that a few fighters just don't understand the rules of the TRBF (Top Rank Boxing Federation), but that won't stop the promotional company from calling on their fighters to put up or shut up. Vanes Martirosian has been telling anybody who can listen that he wants to fight. Well, none other than undefeated Erislandy Lara has called out Martirosian for a fight later this year. Both guys have been jawing at each other online and a fight between the two undefeated would be very intriguing. Of course, unless Lara signs with Top Rank, I doubt it'll happen.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. may or may not be fighting Miguel Cotto this winter, but if he's really feeling nuts, he can face off against Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who is hoping to at least fight his mandatory. Chavez "earned" his mandatory status by testing positive for a banned substance last November, serving a one-year suspension, and being fortunate enough to be born Mexican, which appears to be all you need these days to be given a mandatory challenger status by the ridiculous WBC. Don't take my word for it; that's more or less why Antonio Margarito is fighting for a title next month against Manny Pacquiao.
Potshot Picks
Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora
We've seen this fight before, last June in fact, when Yuri Foreman fought Miguel Cotto in Yankee Stadium. Foreman was the bigger guy with no punching power but more technically proficiency facing the "past their prime" puncher coming up in weight. Foreman was unable to hurt Cotto and was stopped in nine. Substitute Mosley for Cotto and Mora for Foreman and you got my pick. Mosley in nine.
