On December 18, in a "special" attraction, WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal will defend his title against former middleweight and light heavyweight kingpin Bernard Hopkins. The bout, which takes place in Pascal's backyard of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, but Showtime will produce and distribute the event on pay-per-view beginning at 9PM ET/PT.
Pay-per-view? Say what? You've got to be kidding me. Considering that Bernard's last pay-per-view event, a long overdue rematch with long-time nemesis Roy Jones Jr., was essentially a flop after generating roughly 150,000 buys, I can't help but wonder how both he and Golden Boy Promotions were able to convince Showtime to take a chance on the aging 45-year-old. Truth be told, even in his own hometown of Philadelphia, Hopkins has never been a big pay-per-view draw. While Pascal will no doubt draw a large live gate, he too is untested as a pay-per-view commodity.
Needless to say, this is yet another pay-per-view that has "epic fail" written all over it. Hopefully, you diehard boxing fans out there will forego contributing to the growing trend of fights that aren't worth paying for.
