Last month, jr. middleweight Cornelius "K9" Bundrage traveled to St. Louis, the backyard of former champion Cory Spinks, and scored an upset 5th round TKO, capturing the IBF title in the process. Since then, the former Contender star, who went "from 'hood to Hollywood" with the win, has remained humble every step of the way, despite a number of detractors who never thought he'd win a world title. Now, the newly-crowned champion is eager to step back into the ring to defend his titles against the best fighters in the world.
"I hear Sechew Powell barking a lot about what he did, but that was when I was a kid. But see, I'm a grown man now and the dogs are coming. I'm off the leash now," he commented, referring to recent comments made by Sechew Powell, who defeated Bundrage ealier in his career in a bout made famous by their first round double knockdown. "The first shall be last and the last shall be first. You may have won the battle, but I won the war because I'm a world champion now."
Bundrage made it clear that he's put his past losses behind him and he's looking forward to his future and the possibility of pitting his skills against the world's top fighters. "In my rearview mirror, I think I see Sechew Powell, Joel Julio; I see a lot of cats. I see Kassim Ouma, I see St. Louis Cory Spinks, Yuri Foreman," Bundrage reflected. "Now I see in front of me in my big window; I see Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, I see Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez. Those are the fights I want man."
Ever the realist, however, Bundrage is fully aware that those fights won't come too quickly. "Unfortunately for me, to get one of those big fights, I will have to go 10 or 12 rounds in my next fight. Because whenever I do look good, they dont want to fight me, but when I look bad, thats when the phone rings," he added.
