SHANE MOSLEY DROPS DEFAMATION SUIT AGAINST VICTOR CONTE

This weekend, former three-division world champion Shane Mosley was in attendance at Cowboys Stadium to witness Manny Pacquiao's 12-round destruction of Antonio Margarito. While he entertained questions regarding his future plans, most reporters were unware that he was just getting done with some unfinished business from his past. Over the weekend, Mosley's $12 million defamation suit filed against BALCO founder Victor Conte was dismissed. "I'm glad that the Shane Mosley case is finally over, so I can move on with my life," a relieved Conte remarked.

The lawsuit was filed in 2008 by Mosley, when Conte alluded to the fact that Mosley was lying about statements he had made at the time claiming to have unknowingly taken performance-enhancing drugs. Contrary to Mosley's recollection of the events, Conte would explain that Mosley knew exactly what he was taking, and that he himself taught Mosley how to use BALCO's products, including designer steroids and EPO. "Mosley admits under oath he took EPO," Conte explains to the NY Daily News, referring to a video of Mosley's deposition from the defamation case. "He admits I explained how dangerous it was. He admits it would help for performance-enhancing purposes. And he admits that he took it before anyone could have checked with the boxing commission. Shane Mosley knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs."

The report in the NY Daily News outlines more details of the case:

Mosley's grand jury testimony was eventually unsealed, revealing doping calendars Conte drew up for him that reflected his meticulous drug regimen in the lead-up to his fight against Oscar De La Hoya in October of 2003. According to grand jury testimony and Conte's sworn affidavit, Mosley and his trainer flew to the Bay Area in the summer of 2003, collected $1,850 worth of drugs (including "the clear" - the then-undetectable designer steroid THG - and "the cream" - a masking substance), and took a tutorial from Conte on how to inject EPO and apply the steroids.

Mosley shipped the materials home to Los Angeles instead of flying with them, and tapered off them per Conte's instructions just before the De La Hoya fight, despite his claims that he didn't know BALCO was selling him banned drugs.
